As my Muffler was falling off last weekend I noticed a small hole at the back of the catalytic converter. It looks to be about the size of the tip of a ball point pen with some exhaust soot around the hole. With the truck running I can feel a good bit of exhaust coming from the hole. (That's how I noticed it when I was checking the geno's ME kit for leaks... that hole was the only exhaust leak I found )

Anyone else have that hole?

Any idea what its for? Just curious.

I didn't think the 1999 had a cat. Are you sure it's not just a resonator? I have my cat where I can inspect it easily (in the basement) and I just checked it out for holes. None found. It's possible you are looking at a drain hole intended to let moisture out but that's just a guess.

Well it sure looked like a cat to me... . but I could be wrong. Is the resonator forward of the exhaust? What the heck does the resonator do?

I'll have to look in to it today, good excuse to go out and crawl around under the truck.

No Catalytic Converter

There is no catalytic converter on the Cummins powered RAMs. My salesman swore that there was. I just said fine, whatever. Sounds like it may be time up uprate your exhaust system. Maye a 4" system, no?

p. s I can't believe the spell check feature wants to change "Cummins" to "Cummings"!!!!

Yep...

I'm an idiot... ...

It's the resonator..... I called it the cat because that's what I thought I saw in my old hayes manual. Upon further review the exhaust diagram I was looking at was for a gasser. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

But that still does not explain the hole?

And my dealer told me the same thing about it having a cat, I asked when i bought the truck because of our emission testing here in GA and he told me it had to be tested just like a gas engine. A call to the DOT straightened That out. Seems like the salesmen should know their product better.

Thanks

If it's a resonator, there's probably a hole to allow condensated water to escape, vs pooling & rusting out the resonator. Or at least that would be for a gasser. I assume the diesel would be the same.

illflem is right, my 97's cat is sitting in the garage all pluged up. I still dont know why there is a cat on a diesel. The EGT is only high enough when the engine is under load to make it work properly.

I can't remember the specifics, but didn't DC start installing the cats around Jan '94 for the new emission laws that came into effect? I thought for a short period the '94 trucks came without a cat, but it changed at some point in the '94 production year. I could be wrong on this.

Kitty gone

SAme with me my little Kitty puked its guts out !! Darn it !! Mine is a 96 and it has the CAT. I beleive that all the 12 valvers have one, lucky us
