What are the major catastrophic failures of the 3rd gens? I have seen some pictures of what happened after an injector had stuck open, But what else is going wrong in the engines, I was told today that a lot of 3rd gen have been throwing rods Is this true? What causing the problems?

Well, I have 30k on my 06 and it just keeps getting better everyday, I love this truck, its almost unhealthy. Zero problems other than a loose rearview mirror and a bad waterpump that I didn't know was bad because it never got hotter than 200 no matter what. I wouldn't trade it for any other truck.

I have had: steering gear box replaced, both front axel hubs replaced, speed sensor replaced. All in 17K miles on my 06. STILL best truck I have ever owned. Now getting 19+ on the FWY with 411 rear end!!

What is the best way to prevent a stuck injector? Is there a way to know right away if it’s stuck? Would a rail pressure gauge help in indicating one had a stuck injector?

What was wrong with the axle hubs that they needed replacing? How many miles on your rig? I only get 17 to 18 on the freeway, I don't think I have ever gotten twenty, and I have 3. 73 gears.

DZLROKET,

Why was you steering box replaced? Was it pulling to the right? My '04 pulls to the right and nobody can seem to figure out why...

PoerJokes and Duraturds throw rods, not a Cummins. Not sure who was blowing that smoke around but it is pure BS.

Most of the catastrophic failures are caused by:

A. Power adding boxes and DL's

B. Bad fuel

C. An utter lack of common sense on the part of the owner

D. Poorly trained mechanics and technicians

With regular maintenance and a little common sense these engines are close to indestructible even under heavy use. Of course some could break an anvil in a sandbox so there cases of destruction. ;)

I have seen way more catastrophic failures in the 2nd gen 24V trucks than the CR engines even with the crappy fuel and the switch over to ULSD. All in all they are pretty reliable if you don't abuse them. :)

04 57000 miles no problems except death wobble... cured a long time ago with good tires and some suspension tweeking. Love my truck... but my new Jeep is getting a lot of attention lately...

Personally, Iv got an 05 with 40K on the clock and the only prob I had was a P0191 code shortly after I got it.

Had the fuel sensor replaced and havent had any further trouble with it.

I have 175K on my '03. I have had to replace ball joints, u-joints and a hub assembly. I have not had any problems with the engine, even with a power adder.

98k miles on 2005 QC 3500, mostly offroad (oilfield) replaced tie rods once and few u-joints as would be expected running through mud/sand/clay roads. No engine problems, gets better every day!

The other problem on 3rd Gen motors is a few dropped valve seats that pop out of the head. It holds the valve partially open whence it is hammered by the piston.

I saw one that came apart... ... ..... in the dark I reached down to pick up a shiny piece. It was partof a lifter :-laf

The block had a hole the size of texas,3 lobes of the cam were sitting on the motor mount. The repair order stated will not turn over.

THe steering box was "clanking" when I went over bumps. The hubs turned out to be "loose" according to the tech.

04. 5 w/ about 45k... only engine issue was camshaft position sensor. Non-engine issues... u-joints in rear driveshaft and rodents chewing up a bundle of wiring... wires must taste good.

Keep a VERY close eye on the filter housing. I had "the entire" fuel system replaced after either a bad load of fuel or vandalism. It is NOT replaced and I found a 1/4-1/2" of crud in it. WIF light never came on. I don't worry now, replace the filteration system with a GDP F/W sep and 2 micron filter.

From what I've read here, this is baloney. Vaughn is right about the dropped valve seats - seems to be quite a few of those. But I think it's mostly modified later-model (2004. 5-up) trucks.
