Boost Question?

I have spotted a C6500 Chevy truck to drag a fifth wheel trailer and was wondering how to increase the HP on the Cat? I think it is currently rated at 190 horse. I read on another forum that all that is required is to reflash the computer. Is this correct. The truck is a 2001 with 1900 miles on it. No bed, and they are asking $31K for the unit. I thought this was too high for a 2001 used truck.

Thanks for your help.

the 3126 cat is avalable factory rated at 330hp for the rv/emergency vehicle [torque is ±800lbs] not sure if it is all computer though

Not much you can do with a 3126 except reprogram the e. c. m. They got the same stinkin' huei injection system as the power-stroke. I've got 30-50k 4x4 GMC buckets here at work that are set at 210 h. p. ,they won't get out of there own way. Allison don't want them turned up anymore cause their afraid it'll tear up there trannys:rolleyes: . Even with 6. 50-1 rears their gutless. The mechanical 3116's are a little better, but not much. At least you could tweak them a little;) ... Doug

Many thanks one and all for the replies. It'll give me something to ponder before I chunk off and buy. I am also looking at the new M series Freightliner or an International. (What I'll probably do is keep what I got until the economy turns around if and when. )

3126 can be taken to 330hp/860pt from 190 with ECM reflash, pistons, turbo, injectors, and harmonic balancer. About $6500 P&L(assuming clutch and transmission have enough capacity). As far as being gutless... 90% of a trucks performance is in the spec'ing. When the whole truck is spec'ed correctly the 3126 will do extremely well. I will tell FFutch that 6. 5:1 gearing is the problem not the engine. Those gears are putting the rpm way out of the power curve. And as for HUEI get used to it!! In the next 10 years you will be seeing it on alot more engines (and not just CAT and IH).

Hey I agree they are spec'd wrong, but that is out of my hands. We have to have 4wd up here for these guys to get around some of the places they have to go. If I were to spec them they would have M-11's,highers gears and a good Eaton-Fuller manual transmission, but hey what do I know:rolleyes: . And IH will be going to common rail fuel injection shortly,at least for the fords... Doug

How about the medium duty Kenworth w/ 8. 3ISC Cummins rated at 300 H. P. and 950 Ft lbs stock? People think their expensive until they price one out and compare it the the others mentioned above. You'd be surprised!
