Starting 12/31/2009 CAT will no longer supply on-road engines to anyone.

They are getting together with Navistar. Navistar and CAT will build on road vehicles with Navistar engines.

CAT will continue to grow the off-road business with it's own off-road engines.
 
I hate to see that, I have has nothing but good luck out of Cat engines. However if it actually ends up being true I can't really blame them when the on-highway engines only account for about 6% of all the engines they build.
 
Volvo and Mercedes do build their own, but when you buy a Volvo truck you can specify either a Cummins or Volvo's own engine. The Merc engines are getting ever more popular. Freightliner offers them as options and I see tons of them out there.
 
I've heard the Sterlings with the Mercedes engines like to catch on fire. My buddy bought one at a salvage auction. 10 wheel dump with a like new aluminum box and rear tires. Front was gone, burnt to nuttin'! Melted the cab protector on the box too. He said it was the "extreme" end of the burn scale. :-laf
 
Also, No Detroit in Fire Trucks

So wait now its only Cummins and Detroit for OTR trucks?



I know it doesnt have much impact on what we do at TDR, but you might like to know that Detroit has just got out of the Fire Truck business. They felt it was to much engineering (testing) to help each custom manufacturer meet emmisions in their individual chassis.



For the time being the only engine options that I can offer is the Cummins ISC, ISL, and ISM in our custom trucks. I'm a fan of the cummins and I live 10 min from the Jamestown factory so I'm not complaining. However, the cynic in me starts to think we will see unfair price increases on our (admittedly small) market with out competion. We've seen the prices of the Alison trans creep up when it became the only trans we could offer (but, everyting is getting more expensive so I might be reading too much in to this).

I think you need to re-read the press release. The engines (and the trucks) will be a joint-venture design, much like the B5. 9 and C8. 3 were joint venture designs (Consolidated Diesel JV consisted of Case and Cummins).

And the 3. 9L Cummins 4 cylinder. It is used in Case skid steers and forklifts/loaders. I believe they were first introduced (along with the 5. 9L) in around 1983.

I know Cummins is number one in emission testing, they help tune many diesel company to meet emission standards. Just read Diesel Progress sometime. I think it is pretty funny. MTU has some awesome stuff and is fun to work on. I don't think Cat is to worry about US sale as long as Dirt China will buy there stuff to build their massive empire.
 
ford tried to build an engine on the cheap. can you elaborate please? starting in the days of the 6. 9 diesel, and up through the current offering, the engine componets themselves were all navistar/international. with exception to some sensors,programing, some wiring componets, and very few other minor things, ford has little to do with these engines. the original heui fuel system was a cat/navistar joint venture.
 
from what I have been told, its basically a base navistar engine with a ford computer and that is where everything goes bad is the ford programming. Thats what I was told by my brother-in-law who is a tech for ford. By the way they hate all thier ford diesel engines, now thats funny.
 
no, not a joke. ford has nothing to do with the engine itself, never has. mopar tech is correct, programing of navistar engines in ford trucks, is in a big part done by ford. hp,trq and emission's are changed in this way.

No its not going to be like case, or paccar. It is saposed to be a navistar engine with some CAT ideas. The main reason they are getting out is because of emissions. So says my sorce inside Clatterpilla.
