Folks,

I have a simple question (I think). I was told the other day by a ford diesel owner, that the Dodge in 96, not only has a CAT, but also some sort of "return canister" which is a pollution control device. Is this a true statement? Where is this device, and what happens if it is removed? #ad

My understanding is the CAT was the only undesirable on this engine. True?

Not sure about the 96 but on my 97 ther was nothing but a cat and a muffler. Both gone now. I'm running a straight exhaust from the turbo to the tailpipe and the plain truck runs better.

I never heard or saw this mysterious canister on the truck or in the service manual.
Only kind of polution(emissions)device that is in form of canister I know of is a charcoal cannister( and is referred to as a cannister). It's function was to filter fumes from the gas tank vent and send them to the intake mainfold to be burned in the cylinders. Any way that is what I recall they do. (If this is what he is talking about I have ford chilton book will look it up). On my ford van(88) they were small black boxes attached to the frame near the engine.
I've seen some look like small drums near the air intake, on this type of set up if something was wrong with it, the vehichle wouldn't start.
Since Diesel isn't combustible I wouldn't think we would need one.

Mark:

I have a 96' Dodge CTD and did have
a catalytic converter but no canister
of any kind.

The catalytic converter is LOOOONG
GONE and I feel the truck runs better
without it. My converter was REALLY
plugged up bad.
