Wasn't sure just where to post this but here we go. Due to problems beyond my control I may have to move BACK to California, and I was wondering about a few things on my truck. It is not a California truck and the Cat fell out somewhere on the road a few years ago. Are you guys having any trouble with the smog laws and Bombing, 4" straight pipes and other little goodies on your trucks????

Keep it regestered in OR with a OR drivers licence and you will be ok,and money ahead. I've known folks living in CA for years with OR plates,no problem if you have the OR licence even though it's against the rules. You will need to keep an address in OR. It will also make it easier to move out of that hell hole ASAP.

Be prepared to open your wallet WIDE if you decide to register a Non-California emissions vehicle in California. Been there done that. If memory serves me correctly the DMV wanted about $500. 00 in addition to the regular registration fees #ad
There was no smog or equipment check though, this was about 8 yrs ago.

They don't do that anymore. The "Smog Impact Fee" was deemed illegal. Refund checks were sent to anyone who paid. It cost me $750. 00 to register an out of state vehicle. I was reimbursed.

Dave: What's up with this move? I'll e-mail with further! As far as cat/smog etc. Everyone (finally) is correct. No smog check,no cat check, no more extra fees for out of state vehicles. BUT, if possible I would agree with illflem as license and registration will cost a bunch more here!

I like what you guys are telling me about the inport of out of state cars. I would hate to have to go back and find that CAT. It's also good news about THE SMOG IMPACT FEE being dropped. As far as keeping my vehecles registred in Oregon, That's not as easy as it used to be. You have to own property and show it as your place of residence. Too many people trying to save money on their tags. But I have some ideas for that. I guess I can always be happy with the idea that I didn't pay any SALES TAX!!

Dave, not sure how CA is compared to WA, but I bought my 2500 in OR with OR plates and registration. When I went to register it in WA two years later I had to pay the WA sales tax on the current value of the truck, almost $2000 in tax. I wasn't happy. I was also told by a dealer, so it might not be true, that if I bought my truck in CA I would have to pay CA sales tax, then pay WA sales tax again when I registered in WA, forget that, I bought mine in OR.

Another thing WA does, that I'm not sure happens elsewhere, is charge sales tax every time a car changes hands. Seems to me it should be illegal to charge sales tax on something over and over. It used to be that you could get the seller to lower the sale price on his bill of sale to you, everyone did it. Now in WA they check the bluebook value of the car against the bill of sale and charge the higher amount, it sucks!!!

hmm, I kind of went through this recently.

My CA 'born' Suburban was registered in MA ,AZ, and WA with additional tax impact. When I moved to VT, they wanted the full sales tax unless I could prove that I paid tax somewhere for it (now 10 years old).

Much to my surprise we were able to find the controller for my old dealer in Santa Clara CA and she forwarded the needed paperwork from the original sale. (i. e. no tax to VT #ad
)

illflem,
Maryland is the same when it comes to transfering a title. 5% sales tax is paid on the purchase amount. Most people I know fudge the sales receipt. I think Virginia is also the same, Although it may be around 2%. At least it use to be. No. VA residense also pay a personnal propoerty tax on vehicles every year. The current governor is slowly phasing it out.

In WA (and many other states these days) if you want to register a vehicle, you pay the sales tax on the current value of the vehicle LESS any taxes you paid when you purchased the vehicle. So... if you buy a vehicle somewhere with no sales tax and want to register it in WA, you're screwed. If you bought it in another state and paid sales tax, you show that receipt and they'll take that much off the current sales tax value (blue book price) of the vehicle and you pay any difference. Of course, if it's LESS than zero, you don't get a refund! That's why they call it a USE tax, not sales tax. But yes, you pay every time the vehicle's sold because they treat it like a sales tax. Thank god I can keep my residency pretty much where ever since I'm in the military! "Live free or die. "

Same thing here in Texas- 6% of the sales price.

Illflem,
You are misleading people in Wa. You only pay the difference of the vehicle you sold and the vehicle you purchased.
