Recently recieved my service manual for the 2001. It talks of the 3. 9/5. 2/5. 9/5. 9(HD)/8. 0(HD) only having the cat while the 5. 9 Diesel only as having a resonator. Sounds like the service manual isn't correct. Who'ld a thunk it?

Here is my $. 02 if it were me and I was removing my "Cat/Resonator" or what ever anyone would care to call it I would have a muffler shop remove it and make it replacable for emmissions testing. Like maybe expand the joints so it could be slipped in and clamped for a quick run to the testing station and then back home and slip it off and put in the section of pipe I had made to replace it. This may be a little extra work but when I have mine removed I intend to make sure I can put it back in for testing purposes. Testing although not required at the moment will be here eventualy. I guess I am saying that to me it makes no difference what it is if it ain't straigt pipe it is restrictive. So why not make sure when you dissassemble something that it can be reassembled to keep the powers that be happy. #ad

I used to own a muffler shop. All converters I have seen have a heavy case and get HOT when the motor is running. Depending on the model, resonators can be EITHER ahead of or behind the muffler! The "buldge" in the exhaust ahead of the muffler on my 2001. 5 is definitely NOT a converter, but some type of resonator. I haven't had it off to look inside, but the small inlet huge outlet leads me to suspect it serves as some type of particle trap... trapping soot and burning it to reduce emmissions. As long as it is straight through and doesn't have a honeycomb inside it shouldn't affect performance.

Straight from the 2001 manual......

Says resonator. No mention of any cat or catalyst. It's seems funny though, the pic they have for the resonator shows the little extension pipe and then an extension pipe after that and no muff. Maybe they were on to something!

On the light duty trucks there was a mention of California and Federal cats being different. No mention of a difference in the heavy duty. But those are all gassers anyway.

Who ever wrote that literature probably confused the 5. 9L gasser with the parts on the Cummins 5. 9. I wouldn't put a lot of credit into that web site.

Just put a flange at each end with a corresponding flange on the pipes. Then you can bolt it together with gaskets. Then unbolt at convenience.
