CB / HAM Installation

If you have two radios (i. e. CB and HAM UHF/VHF) here is how I did it.

I purchased radios that had the option to be remotely mounted (CB = Cobra 75 WXST; HAM = Kenwood TM-G707A).

The boxes were mounted under the driver's seat with all the cables and antennas comming in under the seat.

The picture is a little hard to see, but your looking from the front of the driver's seat and the radio boxes are mounted on a piece of aluminum plate bolted to the seat mount bolts.

Then I mounted the HAM control head on the end of a mobile phone stick (slightly modified at the top to accept the control head). The mics are on mic clips with the HAM mic on top and the CB on the bottom.

The mobile phone stick is mounted to the front right seat bolt.

The remote speakers are mounted on the driver's visor, with the wiring going down the "A" pillar and back under the driver's seat to the remote speaker jacks on the radios.

Makes for a clean installation, and I can remove the mics/control heads for security. ;)

The Michael Brolin Mount was ordered ans should be arriving soon.

I can't wait to get it installed.

Thanks for all the info.

Now how did you power the CB? I am considering ordering the Painless Wiring Kit from Geno's.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Antenna Mount

I got the Firestik antenna mount from alfenterpirses.com.

Service was quick and everything came in the order. The mount is SS, installs quickly and looks very clean.

I had a sheet metal shop bend me a bracket that mounts to the seat bolts. It provides plenty of space to add switches as well.

As for the Pinless Wiring block, go for it. It is simple and easy to install. Be careful pluggin the fuse clip into the block. applied too much to mine and had to make a run to Radio Shack for a similar clip. It is one of the best investments I have made for functional products.

Out of the way for middled seat use, but at with in fingers reach.....

Mounted mine from the underside of the rear fender. Used a pieced of heavy flat stock a bit over a foot long or so. Bolted it using the existing bumper bolts and added one or two... been awhile... Then drilled the hole and mounted a pl259 mount from Radio Crap , that has a threaded end for the wips. I used on of their right angle pl259 connectors to clean up the coax going to the antenna, but it fell apart.

I must say that for around town and on the road it's fine. But off road that wip gets going and it's scuffed my the fender area above the the tail light. The pictures don't show it so well, but there is distance between the wip and the sheetmetal. The wip is mounted even with the back edge of the bumper.

I made a bracket that mounted between the frames of the drivers and passenger seat, under the center seat.

I made a bracket that mounted to that , to which the my radios are mounted.

I don't smoke and found that the ash try made a nice spot to mount the brake controller and mikes. The ash try light lights up the mikes at night.

Both my daughter and my wife have ridden in the center seat.

The radios are tuck close enough to the seat and inline with the TC shift, that they dont get in the way.

Whip hitting fender

BK,

Had the same problem with a whip antenna hitting the body and scuffing it. Took a piece of shrink tube and slid it over the antenna where it contacts the body. shrink the tube there and it will stop the metal to metal contact. Some others have used a tennis ball, but the shrink tube is a lot less noticable... ;)

RJOL ,

tnx for the input...

The whip is a fiberglass loaded whip with a heat shrink over it. So it hasnt done any damage to the paint... so far... .

I was gonna go with a tenis ball, but I guess you feel the same way I feel about them :p

But I cant imagine it'll be good to keep letting that happen.

I have a window mount dual bander for my Ham rig, bought one akin to it for the CB... so while I really like the performance of the whip, which I may not really need, I'm gonna go with a glass mount.

Now mind you, since I have a cap, and I'm mounting the glass mounts to the rear cab window... . I have to worry about the cap's finish  ... . But I found some nice rubber strips used for the bed rails that I can put a small piece in just the right area to protect the cap.

I never ends... :p

Does it...

BK,

Why don't you just do the Firestik front fender mount for the CB?

That glass mount is going to suck clay pidgions! Mid-as-well just get a walkie-talkie.

OILBRNR,

It's strictly just my HO... .

----- I dont like the way they look. (I'll duck for cover now... ):(

I agree that the ERP of the glass mounts will suck wind compared to my whip... and the fire stick... Thats the reason I didnt go with the window mount in the 1st place.

The only reason I installed one in is that I only use the CB for the wagon train trips and work projects with one of the org's I'm part of... since most folks do not have a ticket or a FRS. It took some effort to break loose the $$ to put one in.

The org I'm part of has really started using FRS for the community and environmental projects and a few of us have both FRS and CB since not all folks have gone over to FRS and stick with CB. So gotta get hold of them some how.

Powering your radio..... went back and got this from a previous post. Hope it helps you!

... . "As for the power lead... ... . I tapped into the power and ground for the power drivers seat (under the drivers seat) using 3M suitcase clips. Works great with no routing of power wires forward".

Good luck!

Just a hint to save your wiring & radio when wiring a Radio ...

Fuse both the positive and negative power leads going to the radio.

Since the antenna carries a ground path , and the antenna is grounded at a seperate body point than the radio, if a grounding strap fails else where in the vehicle, you could lose your radio from the additional ground currents it will carry, at best... at worse you could wind up with a fire if a pcb land in the radio doesnt act as a fuse.
