You can buy any radio (transciever etc) and use it as a reciever.

No laws against that.

Linears arent made for listening. :D

Got you on the linears.

So no test is needed if the (HAM)radio is used as a reciever only, but once you key down you need a license to be legal. Do I have this right?

If you transmit, you better have your FCC license on you or nearby. Yep.

Also, having your HAM ticket allows you to legally have a scanner in your vehicle. Most states have laws making it illegal to have a scanner in a mobile application unless you are law enforcement or a HAM operator.

You can buy a radio most places without a license, but they tend to ask for your callsign to confirm you exist and are giving good info, that's about it. Getting your HAM license is a very good idea. You'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

Correct... The Ham comunity is self policing. They are VERY good at finding unlicenced users (transmitters) and turning them over to the FCC who will fine and confiscate (sp) the radio, mobile or not.

I use a 900 watt variable power linear with a Uniden Grant XL radio. Works great for me. Also you get a little respect (ha)

Yep, we've tracked down a few malicious stations in our area over the years. Built evidence against the offending station, and submitted it to the FCC. Radios taken, heavy fines, and 1 guy ended up in prison for a while. HAM sure ain't Chicken Band, and I like it that way. Be a good operator or get out.

I think he was just wanting a couple of handhelds, probably 25 watts or so, while driving around. He ain't gonna get caught. Besides, just set the freq. for the MERS freq. No one ever seems to be on them anyway and there's, what? 5 channels? Or, set the freq. for any of the marine band channels. Again, who's gonna even hear him under those conditions except another radio within 5 miles or L. O. S. on the same freq. ?

The only thing the FCC would ever be concerned about is if you intefere with aircraft. Outside of that, run all the power you want, or can afford.

I agree with these guys, in that people running any frequency other than the 40 common cb frequencies need correcting...

But at the same time I personally do not have any problem with guys running more than 4 watts on the cb frequencies... I for one have owned a 10 meter radio, but I have never been off the 40 cb channels... no reason to be off somewhere else.

With that said, I am going to sit for my "no code" pretty soon... and be more/less legal.

By malicious, do you mean the radio was obnoxiously overpowered and causing problems or do you mean the operator is malicious (rude and crude)??

I for one think the operator makes or breaks the general opinion of his actions on the airwaves (and thereby either gets himself in trouble or not)...

WOW... I did a search on Yahoo for HAM's,so much info out there my eyes are sore

Had no idea about them before today... Sounds kinda cool, I'm going to look into taking the test and getting a radio.

Jamming frequencies and repeaters, overpowering others (doubling or walking on them), interrupting emergency and national weather service HAM-based traffic, etc. We hunt 'em without mercy. Some people just want to be stupid and attract attention.

I agree, we have one like that around here... I will one day get him, I know where he lives... he does nothing but key up with noise toys (and is pushing well over 2k watts, at least that was what he bragged to his friends)... never talks, never helps people out... just acts like a jerk.

Again, I don't mind guys running more than normal power as long as they act courteous... While I can push around 250 watts, I run it turned down to the point no one knows that.

If you're just doing mobile to mobile on 2m, yes you could probably get away with it, but why bother when the getting licensed is so easy.

The larger problem lies in if you want to talk to someone you dont know. I do a lot of Jeeping. Almost all jeepers have a cb. A much smaller percentage have 2meter rigs (though its growing).

I do a lot of solo jeeping. In one area I frequent there are no cell towers, no 2m repeaters, nothing. My only hope is I might reach some hunter or logger on the cb. Thats why I have I have some extra power (stays off except in case of emergencies).

I'd really like to get a PLB in case things really get hairy some day. Bout the only thing I could count on short of getting a forest service radio (and from my time with them, they have dead spots too).
