CB Antenna Mount & Antenna 3Gen?

Tried to run a search, but it wouldn't let me look for 'CB'...

Anyhow, I was wondering what others have done antenna mount- and antenna- wise for their CB set-ups on the 3rd gen trucks.

Hood vs. bed mount; Firestik vs. Wilson; single vs. co-phased?

The bad: My garage is only 7ft tall, and I don't like having to get out of the truck (e. g. to take off/lay over antenna) to drive into the garage.

I took (rough) measurements, and have determined that the bed (right behind the cab) sits approximately 56" tall, leaving me approx. 2ft. 4" for the antenna. The firestik Dodge hood mount would sit approximately 52" tall, leaving approx. 2ft 8" for the antenna.

Right now, I'm leaning towards a Firestik II 2ft antenna, mounted on the Dodge hood mount.

Radio is a Cobra 75; easy to mount under dash.

Thanks. Alain.

I have the 75WXST (I think) and a 2' no name fiberglass on a mount behind the tool box for day in day to fit in the garage. I have a 3' Wilson FG when on the road.

Geez...

I must be dense :)

Thanks, Hyde, for suggesting the simple fact that I could use a 2ft Firestik for day-to-day driving, and e. g. a 4ft Firestik 'when on the road'... Makes sense - why didn't I think of this :)>?!

You can use a quick disconnect on your antenna and pop it off whenever you need clearance. That's what I did on both my trucks.

I'm running the Cobra 75 and the Firestik hood mount,4ft Firestik 2 with quick disconnect and it works great. what I don't like is the antenna slopes forward with the angle of the 03 hood. I'm trying to figure a way to bend the mount.

Get the pipe wrench!

TDragna:

Easy fix: remove the antenna, get a pipe wrench and do a "little adjusting. " Works everytime.

CB

anyone have any pics or ideas of where to mount compact CB in third gen. not a lot of options in these. I also have brake controller mounted on knee bolster right side so that location is out.

I use a quad wound 5' antenna on the front left fender. Great range and excellent reception. Won't fit in your garage though.

Done

Put my Cobra 75 in with a driver's side, bed rail (stake hole) mounted 5 foot Firestik antenna with quick disconnect. SWR is 1. 0:1 on Ch. 20, and stays within the 1. 5:1 range from Ch. 1 to Ch. 40.

Will just check the PITA factor of having to take antenna down each time I drive in the parking lot at work, at home, or at the airport. If too bad, I'll just get a 2ft Firestik with a quick disconnect for "normal" day to day driving...

Installation was quite easy, although I had to put some aluminum pieces between the bed rail and the mount to 'straighten' the antenna. Great results so far, given the 4W limitation of CB... Too bad they don't make GMRS 'mobile' rigs :).

(Will post some pics in my gallery soon)

I use the Firestik stake pocket mounts (the ones that stick out to the side, so I can still use my topper--see photo gallery) with two-foot Wilsons (co-phased) day-to-day, and they fit under my 7' garage door (barely--no QDs, as they add an inch or two). For trips, I replace them with six-foot Wilson's.

I wonder if a Cobra 148 would fit in that spot?

It may if you don't hang your mic on the end like I do. Just hold it up there and see what you think.

Another option is to mount a Wilson with the short post on the fender mount. If you have a garage with a 7' door, the whip part of the antenna will just bend out of the way. I had one on my '99 and it worked great. Made some noise going in and out of the garage, but it never hurt the antenna.
