co phasing is the pain in the butt process of matching your SWR's exactly the same. . Bro, I am telling you... have your 2 antennas, but run coax to just one. . You will save yourself so much headache! I have been there, and done that... sure, 2 look good, if that's your thing, but use one for cosmetic, and one for the actual radio...

Thought about going with two for looks, one for function. The single 9' cable I have (old sucker) wouldn't reach so I need a longer cable anyway and I ordered a dual cable. Not much I can do about it now short of ordering yet another cable.

How do you match the SWR's? Attach the meter at each antenna rather than at the radio? I think I did that the last time I had them installed. Wasn't too bad.

Base loaded antennas work just fine. .

Figures.

Do you have talkback installed in your radio?? If not, you may want to find a reliable CB shop and get it installed, so you can hear yourself, and be able to know how your radio sounds. .

Nope. That's what dad is for. One of us drives down the road and gives feedback.

Keep us posted and let's see how it turns out.

When we did my dad's, we figured out if they were too long or too short (too long in his case), and procede to cut 1/8" increments from both antennas until the SWR was at 1. 1:1. One thing to remember is to replace the tip of the antenna each time as for whatever reason, it affects SWRs on some antennas.

Co-phasing also takes special wire... RG-59 instead of RG-58??

Co-phasing is not that hard... just takes time. My dad is running co-phased antennas on the front fenders of his 99 with a 1. 1:1 SRW. The only thing with co-phasing is the fact you become rather "directional".

I don't agree with this. It used be accepted as theory, but these days they have determined that it actually "rounds out" your signal.

I was looking at getting a Wilson Lil Wil, but I read somewhere that base loaded antennas are bottom of the barrel.

True, but you can't get a top load to stand up!

I took a step that not many here have. I went from a Wilson 1000 magnet mount to a Wilson 1000 roof mount and it was like nite and day. There are several radios in my county and surrounding counties. When I went to the roof mount, I could talk to people that I could only previously talk to on my base.

On my dad's truck, it is very apparent when you travel with him. Strong to the front and sides, very weak to the rear.

This might be due to antenna placement...

There are top load antennas, usually they consist of a fiberglass mast. They are not very common, but do exist.

Check out this forum, it's free, but you have to register to even read it.

Lot's of good info from these guys. Firestik has a pretty informative site, but they are in the business to sell antennas.

I even ran into hasselbach on the this CB forum for those of you who remember him.

A local CB'er has an array of receivers of some sort that he places around an antenna that he is building, and he can check the area of propagation ... ... ... . too involved for me, but I seen the results.

Trailer maybe? I've often wandered about the nose of my goose being a reflector.

I'm running dual mounts on my antennas but only hook one up, need to do as little more research but non ground sound like it will work

Quick Disconnects will make your SWR's go up just a little more as well... Did you get the firestiks that you can tune on top?? I would never own a firestik personally, I would go with the wilson Silver Load I think they're called. . Same as a Firestik, but with a ground wire on the antenna, and brother, let me tell you. . Big difference. . Good luck though, and hope it turns out well, and tunes well!

Babyfat--How far does your radio get out?? Your antenna bracket has to be grounded in order to achieve optimum Signal, as well as transmit it. . Just wondering. .

We have a field strength meter... and our travels verified the results of the field strength meter.

The results of his twins are the reason I run a single Wilson 5000 stuck to the center of the roof...
