I have a Cobra 148gtl and Im recieving ok but not transmitting, when I key up, the rx meter moves but I'm not getting out . how hard is to fry the transmit circuit? I hardly use the thing,I have a K40 on it with a SWR of 1:3. Any Ideas... ... ... Rick

are you mechanically/electronically inclined? If so, pull the cover off the unit and check the solder connection where the antennae connector connects to the board. I have had more than a few break the solder joint there, due to the antennae connection and the unit not being properly secured. Otherwise, just pop in a new amp chip and see what happens.

Well I guess I am however I took the thing apart check all the joints now it wont even receive at all:confused: BTW they all looked good exept one that I re soldered, but didnt make a difference,oh also I dont know if it would have made a difference but one of the chassis grounds was broken... ... Rick

I got it to receive now. but not TX. Where is the amp chip located on a 148gtl and where do I get it? Or should I just buy a whole new unit, like a 10meter Galaxy or Ranger?... Rick

the amp chip should be attached to a heat sink of some type. It usually is black, about 1/2in wide and 3/4 inch tall (excluding leads) , should have a small bolt attaching it to the aluminum heatsink. depending on type, it will have 3 or 5 leads. I think 5 leads is the norm. they are available at cb shops or "radio shack"

Cool thanks, BTW do you know what PEP means on a 10-12meter radios for example 2970 Ranger says 150w PEP... ... . Rick

Ok Im concidering getting a Galaxy dx88 do I have to get it converted?will it still work on all 40ch's if I dont?... ... . Rick

10 meter galaxys(like the 88) have to be set up(converted)to work on cb freqs. If you buy one at a cb shop they should do it for you, if you buy one over the counter, it'll have to be done.

I have one

I have a 148 GTL-F and the transmit final was out. Took it to a truck stop CB shop and ask them to put a 55 watt Galaxy final in it. When I went to get it he peaked and tuned it, installed variable wattage, added upper and lowers, turned the recieve up , and tightened up the meter.

How much did that cost? I want to keep my 148GTL however I just baught the Galaxy 88 and the shop will convert it for me..... Rick

$60 Total

The most of that was the extra channels $40

the other $20 was the rest. I know the final was $5

What did you give for tha 88? I am looking for one.

@ home I have a Cobra 2000 with the Clemens Cut and a Galaxy Saturn Turbo. Both peaked and tuned. I converted the Saturn

No local CB shop.....

Have you guys found any CB stores/shops online that do the peak and tuning that you have found to be reputible and trustworthy?

I ordered it from www.premiere-electronics.net It was 315. 00 for a stock radio +10. 00 to convert it... ... ... ... ... . Rick

GTL-F vs. GTL

The only main difference is the - F. Seriously The only main difference is that the GTL-F has a frequency counter. Works well if you add upper and lower channels for fine tuning. Or to slide between two channels to !@#$ with peoples head!!! LOL
