If you are really serious about and want a legal 40 channel buy a uniden C. B. or a galaxy 40 channel radio. go to a forum like 1 STOP Electronics for their opinion as they like to tweek and prod and take them apart. But if you are going to use it for your hobbie buy a export radio you will not be sorry you did.

i already have a Midland 79-265 thats 15 years old but still works. what is an export radio? and how does it differ from other ones. thanks

US made radios are limited to 4watts. A Cobra 29, as well as others, can be peaked and tuned.

Imports are over that. Doubt things are enforced much, if at all.

I'm pretty sure you're mistaken about all those radios being illegal... they're just made to be easily "tuned" for better performance.

I would consider not having FCC approval being illegal, wouldn't you? For 10m operation by hams they're even questionable, but for CB use only type accepted 40 channel only units are legal. Check the FCC Part 95 and Part 97 (I forget which applies) for a full list of rules.

Then again there are quite a few people operating with them and as long as you're not abusing it, you'll probably be ok. Then again they have been cracking down a bit more on suppliers and distributors lately.

That having been said, if you want good SSB performance get a President Lincoln, or an RCI 2950DX. The Galaxies drift too much for me to be able to say anything nice about them. I'm one who doesn't care how "loud" one sounds just as long as the message is able to be copied. And please don't get any noise toys, speech garblers (echos, etc) or any of that junk that makes it difficult to understand you.

The 148GTl is an excellent radio. I has a great receiver and can easily be modified to run about 25 watts out by replacing the final transistor. Nice radio.
