I was thinking of the exact same unit you have Dean. By your post I took it that your unit has an external speaker out? I had an idea to use the center speaker in the dash for the cb speaker as I wont be using it when I upgrade the stereo.

The cb has a speaker in the mike, my hearing (what?) isn't great as far as cbs and scanners go, so I just plugged in the speaker from one of my old cell phones. I mentioned those Motorola speakers because they just fit between the middle seat and the floor console. You really don't see them there. I have some more pix of the cell phone install if you are interested in that.

Dean's Cobra CB is similar to mine. The connector box has a jack for an external speaker. I use the external speaker like Dean does as well. I position it on my side of the truck to keep my better half from complaining. I use it mainly when travelling with others or to keep an ear on road conditions.

Not a very fancy install. In my '95 I had a custom overhead console that stored my CB and my Scanner. With the CB on the floor it's kind of hard to hear sometimes. I suppose if I plugged in my external speaker and pointed it up at me instead of the in-unit speaker pointing at my leg it would work better.

Thanks for the info I looked at the camping world site and they listed the cobra radio with everything on the mike for around 98. 00 I think. I guess that is the way I will probably go.

Big Mak - I installed mine the same as yours.



Under the drivers seat there is a slit already in the carpet, and it fishes easily to the rear seat pan under the carpet. But instead of going over the edge of the seat pan, there are several large holes that the cable will pass through, then out the punch under the black mat.



I used a Cobra 29, sideways mounted as yours. Since its the night watch whatever, it is silver white in the day and green at night. Matches all the rest of the Factory and Autometer gauges nicely.

Truck stop; Sapp Bros here in Omaha. Although TDR member 'Lurch' hooked me up with the Bed Rail mounts -- I hadn't heard of them previously. Generally large truck stops are a great place for this kind of stuff. Good variety and they don't jack the price up like specialty shops.



Lengths:

I have two sets of antennaes; one set for 'over the road' and another set that are on most of the time for around town -- since at work I park in a garage with an 8' roof. My 'over the road' antennae are 4' and my around towns are 3'. I might go with taller ones for over the road sometime. When the 3' are on I clear the parking garage by less then an inch -- which is perfect. From the rail to the roof is about 2'; so they 1' over the roof; the 4' antennae 2' over the roof. I'll probably get some 6' sometime; but you can't get the inexpensive ones (which is why I haven't yet) because if they whip too much they'll smack the cab.



With the 4' antennae I get about 4 mile range in rolling hills; probably about 10 miles in the flats. Which is about the best you can expect from a stock CB. The 3' antennaes are definitely too short for highway traveling though -- cut the range to less then half. CBs are a 'line of sight' radio; so taller is better for hills.

OK guys, how are you routing the power wires for your radios. I have mounted mine right in front of the seat, but really don't want to plug it in.

I have it plugged in until I get around to ordering the Painless wiring kit or similar. The last trucks ended up with a mess of wires all over once I had everything installed over the years; and I'm attempting not to repeat that fiasco.

Will any of the mini CBs fit in the lower cubby hole under the radio?



I'm trying to figure out where to put the following: CB, GPS, Jordan brake controller, and an Aegis gun safe.

I have one of those mini CB's, and it will fit in the cubby hole width-wise, but not length-wise and I didn't want to cut the back of the hole out. I went with the Cobra WXS (I think that's the model). All the controls and readouts are in the microphone. The control module is very small, and I mounted it under the dash. I ran a fused line directly to the battery. There's a picture of it in Reader's rigs under Boonieman, Cell phone mount if you want to see it. Just another option to think about.
