Never had a CB before... . never even been around someone who used one. I camp alot in areas that are out in the middle of nowhere... . cell phones don't pick up, etc... . So what do you think?? Do I qualify for a CB?? Where does one learn the ropes, lingo, etc... ?? What's a good beginners CB?? I'd likely only use one for emergency's... . then again... . I wouldn't know what else they're used for.

Depending on terrain and the CB you choose, you will be able to talk somewhere between 3 to 20 miles, and in the mountains may be less in some cases.

Here is a site I found and have been using:

CB Radio Forum

Uniden are good CB, if you don't need sideband go with a PC68 or PC78. They can be Peaked and Tuned to swing up to about 28 watts.

The older Cobra's are also good. Look for a older model 29.

We also spend a lot of time in the mountains and use the cobra in a portable setup for checking weather and for emergency backup. We have ours so we can plug it in the cig lighter, and pop the antenna on the roof with a magnetic mount, but both are stored behind the seat and in the lower cubby.

Keep in mind if those around you don't have CB's they are useless. I use a CB because the others I travel with also have them, it gives us an extremely convenient way to talk from truck to truck.

I'm also a Uniden fan, I have been extremely happy with all the Unidens I have ever had.
