A new GM Billboard for the Duramax...

OK - 2 questions...

1. Is there any national carriers that will train you for driving that has no $$$ associated????

2. Private schools - best one and $$$$$

3. How can you get a job after the school - everybody wants Experience... ... .

Several of the large carriers will train you, for free. The catch is a 1 to 2 year agreement that you'll stay with them. This may seem sucky, but you'll need 2 years verifiable experience to get on with a "good" company. If you have your heart set on being a truck driver, then hook up with Schneider, give 'em 2 good years and then jump ship. (You may find that they aren't all that bad and want to stay and grow with them).

Just realize, the turnover in the industry is well over 100 % per unit. There is a lot of job hopping. The grass is not necessarily greener at another carrier, just the same green wrapped differently.

Some of your local community colleges might offer classes, also. We have one here that does, and from my research on it, there are local truck driving companies that come in and hire people straight out of the class.

The way I got my CDL was I used to be a diesel mechanic, so I drove the trucks and trailers around the yard all the time ( the hardest part of driving is menuvering). About the time I got the license, I started working for coke, transfered from the mantenance shop to the delivery department, stuck it out, and now I have the perverbial 2 yrs.

My son wanted to drive over the road and started a search of driving schools, he checked out all of them on the east coast. He ended up joining up with Schneider National (the orange trucks that are big on the east coast and expanding to the west coast). His commitment was for 1 year, and its been almost 3 years now. He now pulls containers out of the Port of Richmond, VA locally for them. They provide both classroom and behind the wheel, you need to have your CDL learners permit before reporting. He already had a CDL with Hazmat endorsement from driving transit buses for the Town of Blacksburg (Virginia Tech). Yes, you need Hazmat to transport the drunk football fans and college students.

Some states will pay for your training if you are out on unemployment. We have a few drivers that got their training this way. Since leaving the Dealer 2 years ago, I have not looked back-I absolutely love truck driving!

A,most had one during last job search, but the guy who was going to hire me backed out so I never took the driving test. Best part about the classes is that your insurance will be lower if you have taken a class as opposed to just getting it. Blows my mind as I have been driving for a farmer her in WI without the license, and probably have more practical experiance like MAllen than most do when they finish the classes.
