CEL light just came on. Tried the ignition cycle 3 times thing and nothing showed up.

So, how do I retrieve my code and where can I look it up? Is there a list like there is for the 24V's?

Thanks!

Robert

Got it! Showed me the ----- and then said done, but it showed no code. Restarted truck, and the CEL never came on!

What does that mean?

Get used to it. My 2008 3500 kicked codes from the day I drove off the lot. Bought the Edge Insight to clear them. Since I added the Smarty 6. 7 I haven't seen 1 yet.

08 6. 7

It means that the light will reappear at a inoportune time ,

mine did ,service manager said it will reappear and it did .

The truck should have the code stored in the computer also i plug into the handy scanner port under the dash or go to autozone or any major auto parts and they will pull it up also for free . walmart has a nice one also for the toolbox harbor freight's look the same when they are on sale and work also and cheap.

Flash PCM to "AS" .

I had the same thing to my 2008 truck I took it to the dealer and they said it is a o2 sensor acting up and they need to replace some kind of module that goes with it. Of course it wasnt in stock so it will get replaced next week.

A CEL appeared on my '08 C&C staying on for a week of travel from TX to NC and back. Later, when I hooked up and towed my fiver the light disappeared and has never rerturned. I've driven it more than 20k miles since and have never seen another CEL.

I still like to have my handy port scanner to plug in under the dash to see whats up and talk with my service manager about it . Thats why i have my warranty to talk to them for free ,think i saw a scanner at harbor freight for 39. 00 on sale looked identical to the 100 buck one at autozone/walmart just different color .

"AS" flash completed all is well for now on my 08 6. 7 2500

Light has not reappeared. Put 2000 miles on it over the last week.

Either way, gotta get me a scanner!

Thanks again folks! :)

It is essentially an electronic instrument cluster that plugs into the OBDII port. You can configure the display, set the units (Metric or Imperial) add an EGT probe AND Clear codes. I bought it because my truck threw codes from day 1 and only stopped after I went to the Smarty S6. 7. I still use it as a gauge cluster ( I have 3 customized screens).

Probably about $250 w/o a probe...

If you buy the Communist Chinese Tool Store scanner I'd like to hear your opinion of it. Might be handy to have one around if I ever get a CEL or code set. $39 is not a large investment if it works.

Scanner features for all four OBD II Canbus protocols:

The Three Flavors of OBD II

While the parameters, or readings, required by OBD II regulations are uniform, the auto manufacturers had some latitude in the communications protocol they used to transmit those readings to scanners. Naturally, each felt they had the one true way, so we have three different OBD II communications protocols in use.

What Communications Protocol does my vehicle use?

As a rule of thumb, GM cars and light trucks use SAE J1850 VPW (Variable Pulse Width Modulation). Chrysler products and all European and most Asian imports use ISO 9141 circuitry. Fords use SAE J1850 PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) communication patterns.

There are some variations among captive imports such as the Cadillac Catera, a German Opel derivative, which uses the European ISO 9141 protocol.

On 1996 and later vehicles, you can tell which protocol is used by examining the OBD II connector:

#ad

J1850 VPW--The connector should have metallic contacts in pins 2, 4, 5, and 16, but not 10.

ISO 9141-2--The connector should have metallic contacts in pins 4, 5, 7, 15, and 16.

J1850 PWM--The connector should have metallic contacts in pins 2, 4, 5, 10, and 16.

SAE J1850 PWM

SAE J1850 VPW

ISO 9141-2

ISO 14230 (KWP2000)

"CANBUS"

WHAT IS CAN?

Controller Area Network (or CAN) is the newest automotive communication protocol. CAN Protocol is around 50 times the speed of the older protocols.

CAN was used in some cars starting in 2003, and is said to be the only protocol that will be used after 2007

Works with all 1996 and newer cars & trucks that are OBD II compliant

Basic/Advanced Features :

Live Data Stream

DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) meanings are displayed in text mode

Reads Freeze Frame Data

Large Backlit LCD Display

Large Database of Diagnostic Trouble Code(s)

Clears / Turns off Check Engine Light

Reads VIN number: great for verification of used cars!

Tests I/M Status: Misfire Monitor, Fuel System, O2 System, EGR System, MIL Status

Reads and clears generic and manufacture specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)

Supports multiple trouble code requests: generic codes, pending codes and manufacturer's specific codes

Highly reliable and accurate

Easy to read backlit LCD display

Easy to use with one plug-in

Safely communicates with the on-board computer

Stand-alone unit with no need for an additional laptop computer to operate

Firmware updateable via Internet!

Switch between Metric and English Units!

FULLY COMPATIBLE WITH CAN PROTOCOL

Ive got both name brand "OBD II " Canbus scanner and el cheapo and they both say made in china i cannot afford "snap on " tools on a craftsman budget.

There is not one domestically manufactured semiconductor in the USA so all components are globally sourced from overseas. We consumers have little choice.

Times are tough and we all have bills to pay, just different color plastic housing for different packaging or vendors.

I have friends at my local Auto Zone etc. who will check codes for me and its just a courtesy deal for them also.

Walmart will let you use it ,rent it and return for full refund if you have the reciept.

E Bay has lots of them just pick a model that fits your application at affordable prices mailed to your door and no sales tax.

I like the ones that are flash updateable through the computer usually a deluxe feature and there is a extra fee for the flashes.

Thanks for all that info. I read it twice and am still a little unclear. The text spoke of three different approaches to OBD II. I assume that means I must choose the correct one for my Dodge application? Is the device you described and showed the photo of the one available from Harbor Freight?

The one i show in the illustration was from Ebay ad. I would talk to the guys from the local auto zone or store and ask a few more questions on the forum to find a little more detail on these items but have used the cheap ones and the middle of the road ones and they both pulled the codes from my diesel. just need to be able to clear them and read them .

the ones i have are called innova about 60. 00 anfd 105. 00 the harbor freight one is a basic model but they have more than one also.

the ebay ads are some what informative read a few . type in obd II scanner

Okay, thanks for the info and advice.

Is there a particular eBay vender you know and trust that sells them?

Aways look for a power seller and one with approx 100% positive feedback they are in it to make money and keep happy customers look at shipping costs it is important to make sure they have not added any extra charges in there to your zip code

scanner would be from 7 12 bucks ups or usps shipping to your zip approx

just be a smart shopper and compare features prices shipping and read customer feedback and you will know more about scanners that you ever wanted to know

most all scanners will read a Big 3 auto interface trouble code but not all will clear a code and some are not updateable/Canbus OBD2 some are just obd2 readers
