Celebrities in Advertising

Do they convince or help you make a purchase?

I am not talking about the athletes who advertise their respective sports (Nascar drivers/car racing, football players/NFL advertising, basketball players/NBA, etc. as this seems natural) but the various other celebrities who hawk products (actress/cell phones, actor/whiplash lawyer???, singer/cars, etc. ), does it work?

Some of the advertising is funny, interesting, but does it make you buy a product (especially if the celebrity does not fit the product except for the fee they receive).

I understand(?) that a lot of celebrities go to Japan to advertise for a big fee, but do not do this in the U. S. , to protect their image

NO!

In fact if I dont like the actor/celeb for whatever reason, I will steer clear of the product.

Actually, ads don't sways me one way or the other about any product, celebrity endorsement or not. I find some ads entertaining, but I rarily remember what they're advertising. I find some ads totally annoying, but, again, I rarely remember what they're advertising.

Here is a gods honest truth story.



AS I was contemplating which camera to buy,(back in 1995-1996) I saw Andrew Agassi hawking the Canon Rebel series.



I cannot stand him. (at the time).



I was forced into buying the Minolta 400 Series. I do like the camera, no problems with it.



I just was instantly turned off by the Canon Ads.

I like to think that advertising has little or no effect on me, but I know these ads are designed by people a lot smarter than me that make a lot of money. It's hard to really know how many of my buying decisions are based on advertising, even though I think it's very little. For the most part, I don't buy the type of products that are advertised that much anyway. I just don't buy all that many consumer items. Most of my money goes into things like the truck, camper, computer, outdoor stuff, etc.
