I have a 2001 6-speed truck. I want to install a Nokia hands-free cell phone unit in the truck, the kind with the handset.

I am wondering if any of you have done this, and where you put it. There does not seem to be a really good place for it, and I would like to know your thoughts on what you have found to be successful. Also, where did you put the speaker and microphone, and has it worked satisfactorily over the engine noise?

thank you... .

Pana Vise makes alot of mounts. I saw a Gas ram with a Pana Vise attatched to the 4WD shifter housing. It looked really nice. I know the guy ill see if i can get details. Mosy of the time, they mount the Mics up high on the A pillar so it should be heard over the Diesel noise

Cell Phone

Not sure about the Nokia, I hung my Samsung next to the ash tray on a blank in the 'knee panel' in front of the T-case lever. Just enough clearance. If you have voice -recognition dialing piece of advice—fire that baby up and take it about 1500, THEN program the phone. Seems that cell phones do not speak diesel!!:p

Cell Phone Mount

I haven't seen the interior of a 2001, but the following is what I did on my 98.

I removed the storage compartment between the glovebox and the ashtray. I then made custom brackets so as to mount the CB and the brake controller. On the right-hand wall of where the compartment was taken out I mounted a 6" panavise. This allowed me to get the phone cup at the same level as the stereo etc. The speaker I mounted on the left side of the shift column pointed directly and the driver. The microphone I mounted just above and dead center of the instrument panel. It is well protected there, and the "cave" of the instrument panel cups your voice pretty well.

Just some thoughts.

I got the Nokia hands-free kit from AT&T's store. I mounted the control head under the dash, the speaker to the left of the 4wd shifter, the microphone to the top of the rear-view mirror, and the phone holder on the front of the shifter cover, almost underneath the cup smoothie. I also connected a wire that silences the radio when the phone's active, and ran all the wires from the phone holder (and the radios) inside the shifter, protected by a wiring loom.

It's not perfect, because the phone's difficult to reach when driving, but I don't typically make calls while I'm driving. I setup my phone to auto-answer when it's in the car mount, and that's about all I use it for. For me, it's a lot more handy for charging the phone every morning, on my drive into town. The cab noise at freeway speeds makes it fairly difficult to carry on a conversation, anyway.

Between the phone, the GPS, the scanner, the radar detector, the gauges, the radios, and the G-tech, it looks more like the NASA control room in the cab sometimes. At least it keeps the passengers busy, trying to figure out where all the beeping is coming from. :)

Gordon,

I installed the Nokia hands free kit in my 97' M3. I put quite a bit of thought and time into everything about the system... Hence I didn't have to drill a single hole or cut anything on the car. IMO, the install turned out absolutely flawless. Especially after seeing a few of the so called "professional" installs in cars here at work.

Wish I had pictures. Gotta get a digital camera...

I purchased the M3 cradle mount from pana-vise and have been VERY pleased with it. If memory serves, the mount for the ram is located on the right side of the radio. Fits between the right side of the radio and the dash.

If you don't like this mount, most installers use a universal post mount. Mounted to the floor or something. I don't particularly care for this arrangement, but to each his own.

One piece of advice I will give you straight off, is to get a Genuine Nokia kit rather than one of those "me too" kits.

A friend of mine got a "me too" (generic) kit and you can definitely tell a difference in quality in how its made and its performance.

Even though it looks very similiar. Point being, its not worth the little bit of money you can save.

As far as the Ram install, I've only begun to investigate. What I have determined is to mount the speaker directly underneath the middle seat, facing forward. This provides for a "stealth" installation of the speaker, while providing equal, yet powerful voice levels.

As far as the Micophone, I think they recommend mounting to be approximately 36"-48" from the speaker, to avoid excessive feedback. Since the microphone is somewhat directional, it will cut down quite a bit of feedback from the speaker.

As I said, I don't have one installed in my Ram, so I cannot comment on its performance. I would die without it in the M3.

Aside from the hands free part... . The external antenna has proven invaluable in keeping calls when entering "dark" cell areas.

Another accessory I would recommend is the privacy handset. It allows you to take advantage of the battery charger and external antenna... While you talk on a full size volume controlled privacy handset.

These things alone, makes it worth the money. IMO.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to e-mail me directly.
