GSM, TDMA (Time Divison Multiple Access), and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) are different cell phone technologies in use by different carriers. CDMA is used by Verizon and Sprint. TDMA was used by AT&T, but I think their name has changed.

I guess I see it this way:

The CDMA could be the 24 valve and the GSM the 3rd gen common rail. I still have the 12 valve (analog) and I'm trying to figure out if the new stuff is really better. :p

And don't stay too attached to TDMA. All of the domestic TDMA carriers are converting over to GSM. US TDMA (IS-136) is being retired. Well, the major ones, at least. USCellular switched to CDMA. Once Cingular and AT&T get their networks converted to GSM, there'll be very widespread GSM service available.

Unfortunately, I don't think anyone makes a dual-mode, dual-band GSM phone (one that covers analog [AMPS] and GSM on both 800MHZ and 1900 MHz).

A buddy of mine claims that from AT&T you can now get a trimode GSM/Analog/TDMA phone, I think his is made by Sony Ericsson.

The two major players are CDMA and GSM. Both will soon have huge footprints. If you mostly stay local, get what works good for you. If you travel a bunch, well the maketplace is in flux with the AT&T merger with Cingular there will be a lot of GSM coverage, plus T-Mobile has a growing GSM footprint too. I currently have a AT&T plan and a T-Mobile plan. I like the T-mobile better for price and quality, BUT the AT&T coverage is broader. Hopefully when the AT&T GSM conversion is complete I can roam there with my T-Mobile.

Steve,

I may have missed it, but what brand and model of cell phone are you using?

Thanks in advance.

Currently I have a Toshiba CDM 9500. I wear out phones in about a year so I go through a LOT of them. Alltel always replaces my phones for free. I've had this one for about 5 months now. Last couple of phones were Nokias and they sucked IMO.
