The 'New' Dodge flip up console seemed like a great idea when I got my first one in 1994, but I never used the center
seat. With the '99 still haven't used the seat and the cab with a 5 speed is getting a little crowded with 2 radios, a CB, a siren, a switch box and a single useable cup holder. I would like to remove the seat and flip-up storage box and install a real center console with a hinged top combo arm rest. I would probably make it out of 1/2" plywood and cover it with matching vinyl.

Has anyone done this? Were there any problems with seat structure? Were there any other problems encountered?

Out of 4700 web members someone has to have done this, and would he do it again?
Thanks,

Great IDEA! I think it should be an optional accessory from DC. #ad

There was a guy did what you want and used a console out of a van and it worked out real well, he said it looked like factory. A search might turn up the thread.
Good Luck

I have a 97 extended cab with the center seat and console taken out. All you have to do is take 4 bolts out. That leaves 4 brackets extending out about 2 inches and a couple of inches from the floor. These brackets are bradded (sp?) to the seat frames and would make a good start to making your own console. I've converted my back seat into a bed so I made a folding armrest for the driver seat so I can just fold it up and step back into my sleeper. It's not a walk-in condo like some Freightliners, etc but when your tired, it does work.
Seems like I read a post somewhere about the newer truck consoles bolting up a little different so this info might not help you

When I get some time this winter, I'm going to build myself a new console. I will use aluminum and spray it with Armorthane (we use this brand of bedliner technology to coat our aluminum cases) to match the agate interior. It will have tool storage space and useful cup holders !! Also, I will mount a Colormap GPS and maybe some gauges.

Thanks everybody who had some suggestions.
I've got a trip scheduled to Omaha, Lead, SD, Pueblo, CO, Ottawa, ONT. and Nashua, NH and will start the destruction of the front seat when I return.
If any one spots me in my travels (Big custom winch bumper, cab high topper, and Tenn Emergency plates) flagg me dowmn so we can visit.

Check out any local Light&Siren shops that do work on emergency vehicles. Often they can bend up and install a really nice console for you.
