I had a few goals in mind when I decided to but a sub in my truck. First goal was no loss of storage room. This ruled out any of the boxes that fit under the rear seat or on the floor. I then looked at the JL Audio box that replaces the front center seat cushion.

My second goal was the project couldn't pull much out of the new transmission fund. The JL Audio box at $400+ was just too big a dent in the fund. I also didn't like the fact that no one would want to sit on the center seat due to no cushion. I couldn't have that since I am single.

I decided to make my own using plain old particle board. I cut the seat frame to allow room for a box and then cut the cushion so that it was still 2" thick at it's thinnest. I then made the box to fit in this vacant space. The resulting box measured 0. 35 cu ft, about perfect for a 8" sub. I used a Kicker Solobaric S8L7 and powered it with a Punch 401S amp. Total cost was $230 thanks to Ebay, both the sub and amp were NIB.

I haven't heard the JL audio box so I can't compare mine to it. The bass is very clean and sharp and can be heard from the outside. People will still hear the diesel before they hear the sub but I am not a ricer so that wasn't my goal.

Good idea

I may have to try that. I have a reg cab and the center seat gets used sometimes too. I don't keep anything under the middle seat so that could work perfect for me. May have to try that. Thanks for the info and pics.

Very nice. One thing I have found is that you have more appreciation of a box you built yourself. In most cases you can have more stereo for less money. :)

were did you mount the amp?... . this is somthing I have been thinking about for a long time and want to do but just havent taken the time to be inventive.

thanks for posting your idea!

I mounted it under the passenger seat. I have electric seats so I didn't have much room to stick anything there anyways. I use the space under the rear seat for storing most of my incab junk so this setup works great for me.

I have a custom box I built behind the seat in my Standard cab. Actually, the truck just got crunched, so it's for sale in the classifieds section now.

Sounded great in the small cab too. Infinity Kappa Perfect 12. 1 12" sub, 4ohm, single voice coil in 1. 4 cu ft custom box. 3/4" MDF construction, 3 months old. Pics at: http://www.speedcraving.com/stv/sub-box/
