Centralia, Pennsylvania

Today I caught part of a History Channel story about Centralia, PA. The coal mine beneath the town is on fire, and has been since 1962! WOW! The story is fascinating... anyone ever been there?

On edit: Further reading indicates there are underground mine fires all over the world! There's a massive one in China.

That's pretty amazing. How do the fires get their oxygen? That's so hard to believe.

I live about 30 miles north of there it is really neat to drive through that place during the night, all you see are orange ambers glowing through the ground. Plus during the winters you can tel where the fires are because the steam just belows from the ground.
