Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) WOW I've finally done it!

Hi,

I have a 99 Ram 4x4. I am changing brakes soon and I want the

longest lasting brakes. Has anyone had any experience with

ceramic pads. Are ceramic pads better or longer lasting then carbon metallic?

Thanks, Ed2

I can't speak for the ctd, my brakes look great at 50k mi. I put the ceramic pads on my jeep gc in December and hate them. The ceramic pads don't stop well unless there hot and several quick stops warped the rotors. Replaced the rotors with premium forged steel rotors and these warped on the first quick stop. All parts used were mfg' by raybestos, when i called them I was told they were aware of this, that the ceramic has a higher friction coefficient, and the rotor cannot dissipate the heat fast enough. IE more friction = better stopping = higher heat = warped rotors. Nature of the beast. :(

You cant use a grand cherokee as an example their rotors are notorious for warping. Dont believe... www.jeepsunlimited.com Personally I am awaiting the day we can get carbon rotors :D :D Same power hot or cold, wet or dry, 100,000 or 100. Yeah thats what the new ferrari enzo has. As for pads... Who knows:D

There were several folks who reported on them over on Fritz's message board. No dust, long lasting, squeak and don't stop as well, plus they cost twice as much as Carbomets. I'd stick with the C-Ms, well proven to be the best match for our brake systems and rotors. Best place to get them is from tdr brake guru Sam Peterson 360/357-4958. Sam can also give you his opinion of ceramics.

WWWAAAYYY ditto on the EGR rotors and pads. I've tried most all the other products and the carbon kevlar pads are far superior in my opinion.

The 3rd set of carbon metallics is on my truck now. I am pretty hard on brakes and use them a lot as nearly all of my driving is urban and traffic. I get a little over 40K miles out of the Performance Frictions from AutoZone. Price just went up to $39, but they are lifetime warrantied, I am down to $13 per set. My OEM pads lasted 40K as well, but the PF stop a lot better and the brake fade is not nearly as bad. The thing that I really like is that they do not eat my rotors, a lot of the high performance pads out there do eat rotors. This is the last set of pads I will get on the original rotors, but 4 sets is a lot of life for a rotor to still be healthy.

Ditto on Carbon-Metallic

I replaced the OEM pads on my 1996 4x4 with Performance Friction pads. That at 18,000 miles after I literally smoked the OEM pads pulling a 27 foot trailer down the Arizona 260 grade west into Camp Verde. They work, and they don't smoke.

I can't comment on the ceramic pads, except to speculate that anything approaching the harness of the rotors (abrasive, not Rockwell) that won't reject heat will be trouble.

When it's time for rears, I'll replace them through Sam. But I HATE working on drum brakes. If I wanted a spring launcher, I would have bought a spring launcher.

Yea, no kidding. I wish the springs were aranged the same as whats used on the rears and trailers on 18 wheelers. MUCH easier to work with.

I am rebuilding the front end of my 96 4x4 this weekend. Going with the EGR gas slotted rotors and carbon kevlar pads along with the stainless front brake lines. Just swapped the rear shoes and drums a couple of months ago. I will probably upgrade to the EGR disk conversion for the rear in the future.

I just ordered my EGR brakes.

I just ordered my new brake package. Blueprinted calipers, gas slotted roters, carbon kevlar pads,SS brake lines, etc. I can't wait for my truck to stp as well as it runs. Thanks for the info.

EGR Brakes

Anyone have ballpark prices on EGR rotors, calipers, and pads ?

My brakes have always seemed to warp since I bought the truck. My pad wear is really uneven too even after cleaning up the slides and the caliper slide area.

Thanks,
