Have been reading the posts about extended idling. Trying to figure out what the difference is in the standard trucks and the 4500/5500 trucks that are "Certified Clean Idle". Supposedly you can leave the truck idling all day at a job site or whatever, with no problems.
So what gives? Why wouldn't they use the same setup on the regular trucks so that idling wouldn't be a problem. Is it a computer, computer flash, or entirely different DPF system.

I idled my 99 quite often and sometimes for extended periods. Like to keep it cool in the summer if I was out grabbing something or whatever, at an emergency scene, etc. I know, I know... Extended idling will do this and will do that. So they say. Not interested in hearing abut that again and again. I had 300k trouble free engine miles so it can't be THAT bad.

I think this actually only deals with idling of medium-duty trucks in California... . you have to have the sticker to idle a 2008 or newer medium-duty (or larger) truck for more then 5 minutes in California.

I would think that there is some high-idle that triggers after some certain parameters are met on the 4500/5500 trucks... you should be able to trigger high-idle on your truck by doing this:

With the transmission in PARK, the parking brake
applied, and the engine running, press the speed
control switch to the ON position, then press the SET
switch.

The engine RPM will go up to 1100 RPM. To increase
the RPM, press and hold the ACCEL/RESUME switch
and the idle speed will increase to approximately
1500 RPM. To decrease the RPM, press and hold the
DECEL switch and the idle speed will decrease to
approximately 1100 RPM.

To cancel the Idle-Up feature, either press the CANCEL
switch, press the ON/OFF switch, or press the
brake pedal.

if this doesn't work, your dealer should be able to activate it with StarScan

I can do the fast idle on my new truck.

Bob, that was the link I was about to post. There is no real difference in the 4500/5500 cabs or engines correct? Just heavier/different suspension & frames, right?

So why not just put the same setup/system/software in trucks across the board so they're all "Clean Idle Certified"

So, essentially I could idle my truck for 8 hours (I know, not recommended) and it wouldn't derate the engine or shut it down?
Not trying to be difficult, just trying to understand how this whole system works. So far, I've been afraid to idle the engine longer than just a trip inside a gas station or a stop at sonic. Don't want to plug up the DPF and cause expensive problems.

All the trucks are clean but the stickers are vin specific and as I understand it an extr cost option

Yes, they are vin specific and only available from the engine manufacturer. I order most of the replacements for our dealerships and the process has a stringent procedure.

On big stuff the stickers are on the left side of the hood, guess what gets hit and repainted the most on a truck?? The hood.....

So between crash replacements and aggressive power washers that wash the sticker off or make it fade I am fairly busy. The remnants of the old sticker have to sent back to the engine company after replacement, there is a procedure if the sticker is AWOL but I have to sign it.

Almost forgot, we are also required to put the sticker on. The customer / end user is not allowed to even have the replacement sticker in their hands. Same goes for replacement engine serial number and EPA stickers, we have to put them on.

I bet if you tried to idle it for 8 hours without activating the high-idle it will plug the DPF and go into regen...

Would it do it with the truck not moving? I was under the impression that regen only happened while moving above 40.

I like the way our newer (2009 with a cummins) fire trucks works... It gives a HEST light during passive regen. When its time to do a full regen, you can stop the truck and hit the button on the dash, or just run it down the interstate for a few minutes. I'd love to have that setup in my truck.

Bob that only pertains to C&C trucks, unless your specific to California DMV as a commercial vehicle. It would be funny to see a Toyota Tacoma with a weight certificate. All trucks are registered as commercial plated vehicle's but are not subject to weight certificates and the protocol. On the other hand the C&C's are incomplete vehicles, and as of 2006 changed the way they are registered. They are considered as true commercial vehicles, I found out the hard way when my dealer registered my 07 C&C and in 08 wanted to register for 26K and had to re-register the truck as a utility vehicle. I had to get it inspected and weighed all over again as if I was registering a used vehicle for the first time in california. In other words the dealer ****ed up.

Craig,
I too like to leave my trucks on high idle and am well aware of what everyone has to say about it. I have yet to see an actual number of recommended min that Cummins says can used.

I want this truck to be around for a long time, we have talked about this and as of now it seems that 5min or less is the belief

Anyone have new FACTS
Jay

Last time I was in a Calif Truck stop there are some pretty old trucks that idle a lot longer than 5 min!! im sure that someone is going around looking at that with the Calif economy such as it is!!!!

Just another money scam more than likely!!!! they scam it from your pocket to theirs

If the engine is running, the DPF is building soot. Plain n simple. As long as you allow the regens to happen, you'll be fine. There's a couple of ways the management system can measure the soot level. There's a sensor that can measure the differential of pressure pre and post DPF. By looking at the pre DPF pressure and post DPF pressure, they can calculate the soot level, along with run time and completed regens.
Regarding clean idle, with the class 8 vocational trucks I deal with, if they are left in PTO, they will idle till the sun goes down. Depending on configuration, a regen may or not happen. You have to learn what you're driving, and how to manipulate it. My guys do the opposite and know how to prevent it so soot build and run time cause a stage 4 condition (automatic regen not possible) where they must bring the truck to someone like me to get the laptop and force a regeneration.
I must say that of the few systems I see, the 6. 7 Cummins ('08 and '10 SCR) that are in our Jhonston sweepers are all Cummins systems (probably similar to the RAM) and are the most flawless running with the least problems.

Last time I was in the TA truck stop in Ontario Calif. , the CHP were giving tickets for just that.

Really? that's the one I was in on the East side I do know that they are looking at Scales to make sure that the reefer trucks have their ARB stickers posted. I talk to some of the Drives that come in and haul the FIL/Son's beef to Reno and Las Vegas NV about it and they said the same that Calif is making themselves a state that nobody wants to truck in. When the drop the Beef off they run to the Central and Imperial Valleys of Calif to bring back Veggies.

They looked heartless as they were writing them tickets, there were three pairs of CHP's walking the truck line looking for those awful polluters. Trucking in California only gets more expensive which we pay for in the end.

Hey Big, you got any room up there in Montana? :-laf:-laf:-laf:-laf

Well Hell ya!!!! when ya come up Ill give you directions to the house and make sure ya drive in at night and park your truck in the shop and close the doors. SO NONE OF THE TOWN'S FOLK CAN SEE THEM CALIF PLATES :-laf:-laf
