2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Change from 2500 to 3500

I need some info on changing my truck from a 2500 to a 3500. I have a Cummins 1996 4x4 2500 extended cab (3:54) and I want to change it over to a 3500 and I was going to change the rear axle. Need to know what years around a 1996 year model will work on it. I have found a 1999 (3:54) with drum brakes. Will it work and do I need the springs also?
