I have a 1996 2500 CTD Club Cab. The LT245/75R16E Michelin tires on it were made in 2012. So they are 12 years old.

Through an odd transaction, I came into the possession of five Goodrich AT LT235/85R16E tires that are three years old. Three have 80% tread. Two wore on the outside. They had been installed on a Toyota Tacoma, so it's unlikely they were overloaded.

The diameter and load capacity of both sets is the same. What, if any, awful things will take place if I install the Goodrich tires on my CTD, at least on a temporary basis? All else being regular, in which position should I mount the tire that wore on the outside? When on the Tacoma, the raised white letters were on the inside, so the worn edge can go to the inside if needed.
 
Out of the 5 tires, only 2 are worn, and those are worn on the edges. I had hoped to use just one of the worn tires. Truck has a limited slip rear axle.
 
I'd put both the worn ones on the rear axle and keep one of the three non-worn for the spare. The worn ones could cause drivability issues if placed on the front.
 
They must be at least "E" rated for our trucks.
Years ago, I ran a couple sets of "D" rated tires. Each set broke belts in the tires once they got a little worn.
If the tires are very worn, do not put them in the rear. It can be a safety issue, confirmed by many tests.

My truck came with load range D tires and never gave me a bit of trouble. The weight ratings on the door tag is with D rated tires.
 
I'm in Florida. Mine would always blow belts driving at highway speeds, in summer months, on fairly worn tires, where they lacked the ability to dissipate heat. The heat and extra weight of the 4wd were likely contributors. I'm on my 3rd set since going back to E rated tires, with no blown belts.

How worn are they?
 
Of the 5 BFG KO2 load range E tires I got in the transaction, all had 2021 manufacturing dates. One had never been on the ground, being used as the spare. Two were in near new condition. Two showed wear that looked like camber issues. I dismounted the three good BFG tires from the Tacoma 16 inch wheels. Then I cleaned them up, gave them a close inspection, and treated them with 303 protectant.

I already had four rechromed wheels from a 1995 CTD that I had cleaned up and resprayed to be the same color as the truck. To those four, I also cleaned up and resprayed three more 1996 wheels that weren't quite as good. The respraying included the back side and the rim seat and internal area, paying special attention to the valve hole.

At Discount Tire, I bought a brand new KO2 in LT235/86R16E. They installed that one on the rear axle along with the 2021 dated spare. The other two went on the front. The tech at Discount made certain that the manufacture date on the 3 loose tires I brought in were all in range. They balanced up pretty well, but the new Fe-Zn weights look bigger than they really are. :mad: Then they put the old set of Michelin tires, in LT245/75R16E in the bed. The old tires had a 2012 manufacture date. Only two are even close to suitable as a spare.

I was expecting the truck's driving manners to be just so-so, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I'll probably move one of the weirdly worn BFGs onto a Dodge wheel and use it as the primary spare. The other one will go in the back of the Tacoma as a second spare for trips.
