Clay, that is exactly the price range they gave me, and I think that's just not happening. We might do a chip, then when the tires are ready to be swapped he'll probably go bigger. It's a good idea.

I've heard of a gear splitter, but what exactly is it?

Thanks for the input, Steve (and everyone). :)

Maybe he should just sell that enormous camper...

I like the 3:55 gears myself, it tows my 13k 5er just fine, even in the mountains. Took a trip to Oregon once and had no problems. I though about swapping to 3:73 and was quoted $500 for parts, $250 for labor an additional $250 if they pulled the axle. They ( Ft Worth Gear and Axle ) told me they prefer to do the change with the axle removed. So far I have decided to stay with the 3:55's, works great for me, I get nearly 20mpg with it.

It is really important to remember that the variables are numerous as to what transmission you have, the rear end gear, the size tire and the engine you have as to the results that you may get with a 3. 55 or a 4. 10 gear. Early model cummins do not have the high operating rpms that a 3rd gen has. An early truck with short 16" tires would make a 3. 55 gear seem like a 3. 73 with taller 17" tires. The charts will show this. This can get confusing.

New word of 3.73 swap

:)Maybe the swap to 3. 73 might be worth it. Earlier I said no, but my experience this past weekend makes in favor of the swap. We drove 260 miles in some of the rough areas around Roan Mountain, NC, much of the time hauling the camper and the rest of the time on steep mountain one lane roads, at 16. 2gals gives 16mpg. I consider that pretty good for the kind of driving we were doing. My last 2 cents worth. Oo.

I changed from 3.73 to 4.10.

Rhondasway,

I made the change in the other direction. I tow a 17,000 lb 5th wheel and wasn't satisfied with the 3. 73 rear end. I am very pleased with the change. However, that means I have the 3. 73 in a box in storage down near Carlsbad, NM. It is for sale if you want it. We are full-time RVers and won;t be back in NM until this fall, but if you are interested let me know.

Are you still around Morganton, NC? We keep our RV around Roan Mtn.

If mileage is what you want buy a TST Products box for your truck. I had one on my 2003 NV5600 3.73 truck and it will give you about 2 MPG more if you don't use all the power it also gives you!
