Change Fuel Filter

Changed the filter on my '01 for the first time yesterday. Drained the can empty because I saw something on the bottom. Turned out to be a piece of black plastic, a clip that had broken off at the factory. Bumped it a number of times and would not start. I tried bleeding the injector line but could not see any results. Just loosened the nut, did I do it wrong? Anyway I bumped it more and cranked and now is running fine

No what you did usually works, just bump the starter a few times should fill the filter canister, UNLESS you have a weak pump like I do. I had to bump mine numerous times to finall get it to start. After checking the lift pump press it was low, about 8 to 10 psi.

Any idea why I did not get anything out of the line when I cracked it. My guess is since I had to bump it more, the fuel had never filled the can when I did the line. Seems to me I should check my FP.

did you happen to re-torque the inj line?? It is very important to torque it to 29 ft-lb`s in order for correct tension on the connector tube. .

Your truck is too new and you baby it too much to already have a FP problem. I suspect you are correct when you figure that the filter canistor wasn't full yet. I usually pull the fuel filter drain and bump start until fuel is filling up the jar under the truck--then I know the fuel filter canister is full. You can also loosen the Schrader valve going into the injection pump. Careful though, I took a shower this way.

Has anybody ever installed a plug in the cap that can be opened to bleed the air from the filter can while pumping.

JWhitcomb, I don't think anyone has tried that ( or at least not posted that they tried that). You could do the same by having someone bump your starter while you pushed in a Schrader valve, guessing here that the one on the inlet to to the VP44 would be a better choice.



It's really not necessary, in my very limited experience. I drain my fuel filter canistear at every FF change, replace the old FF with new, seal the cap and bump the starter several times. Then I crank until it starts ( no longer than 5-10 seconds at a clip, letting the starter cool down in between attempts). She usually fires right up on the first try with a good lift pump.

OK Bigsaint, I will post it...

I installed a "pop-off valve" to the pre-filter port on my 99 set at 10 PSI. The "pre-filter" air at filter changes goes back to the tank. Also, hopefully, the air that is "in the fuel" after a couple hours of use is being filtered out and sent back to the tank also.

Yes, the use of a 3/4" crowfoot is recommended. .

Aha Steve, I figured that someone out there in TDR land with a non-Schradered FF had done this, sounds pretty neat .
