Change NV271 Transfer Case Oil

My truck is coming up on 25k miles. That being said, I have been reading post on how-to change the oil in the differentials and the NV5600; however the one item I have not been able to find much detail on, is rather or not the transfer case and NV5600 share the same oil or not. I think I remember reading somewhere that they are separated by seals and the transfer case takes ATF? Any links comments are welcome. Thanks in advance



Note: I am not sure if it matters or not, but I have the electronically shifted transfer case.

The two components are seperate! ATF+4 in Xfr case, 10W-30 in the

NV-5600. I use the Amsoil lubes, of course.

I've read this 10w-30 thing which brings up another thing ... ... ... . it this detergent or non-detergent? I would assume non-detergent since there is no combustion involved?
 
This thread reminded me on my next oil/filter to do the transfer case too. As I was looking over the service manual for the change procedure I noticed on page 21-646 there's a magnet in the transfer case. Unfortunately you have to disassemble the case to get to it! That stinks!!



It would be *nice* if an enterprising young machinist were to offer a replacement drain plug with a very strong magnet on it. ;)

I have been running light synthetic motor oil (Mobile One) in my transfere case for as long as I have had my Dodge. I checked with the manufacturer of the TCase and an engineer told me that ATF is really too thin and recommended light sythetic for best service. I have Auto transmission, the two are separate, there is seal and leak area between mine. I have replaced the rear seal on the transmission myself. Just my 2 cents worth.
 
Thanks for the replies everyone. I plan on replacing with OEM spec fluids. If ATF comes out of the transfer case then ATF is going back in. I also plan on using Pennzoil synchromesh fluid for the NV5600 and 75-90w syth for the differentials.



my truck is 100% stock (except for the break controller and the fuzzy dice hanging from rear-view mirror) My goal is to keep it that way until the warranty is up (since I paid for it) Then I will worry about bombing the hell out of it.
 
It is a good idea to at least look at the t-case fluid. My '99 Ford was turning it black (ATF). After a couple of changes at the 5k oil interval I swapped it to Amsoil ATF and it never turned dark again. I started changing all of my t-cases when the transmission flushes are done, and they all run synthetic ATF now.
 
IIRC, the other two 4x4s I have owned both used ATF in the transfer case. One was a Ford Bronco II the other was a Mazda B4000 (Ranger). Both had Borg-Warner cases. My point is it doesn't seem to be uncommon for t-cases to take ATF. However, I've always thought it was dumb and that the cases should take the same fluid as a manual transmission. But I'm afraid to use anything else... although KB0OU gives me a little more faith. Wayne, I'm surprised you're using ATF... I would've thought if there were a "better" fluid type you'd be using it (you're usually pretty saavy with your fluids). So why aren't you using something like 10w-30 in the t-case too?

Any of the fluids in the transmission or transfer case is detergent, as they are using synthetic lubes, which are highly detergent.

The transfer case calls for ATF as the lubricant, which I do use.
