Have read on some posts ,when changing from dino to synthetic It's a good idea to dump synthetic after a thousand miles, and refill with new fluid and filter. Can anyone give me some answers, and is this necassary. Also after this change what would be a good time period to change again without getting synthetic lab checked. Any and all info would be helpful.

thanks

First you would want to run your truck on Dino oil for the first 10-20,000 for break in. Amsoil makes a product that you add to your current oil right before the switch over to synthetic eliminating the need for the "flush change". It would be to costly to do another synthetic change after only 1,000 miles and is not necessary with the Amsoil additive - synthetic oil alone is going to cost approx $100 per change (not including the filter). It is not uncommon to get 20-30,000 miles out of a good synthetic oil (changing your filer at the regular intervals and topping oil off) and you can get more if you have it lab tested by performing an oil analysis. Some belive that you can go even longer if you use a bypass oil filter setup and combine that with oil analysis.

No need to flush - hell, the major oil companies sell a "blend" of mineral and syntehtic. Just break your engine in for about 5,000-10,000 miles, then change to the brand of your choice.

As far as drain intervals, you can usually safely double or triple a 5,000 mile drain interval. Most will continue to change the stock oil filter at a 5000 mile clip.

I do not recommend going longer than 12,000-15,000 without oil analysis or being very familiar with your truck and hwo it operates. Going longer than that interval without doing some sort of oil analysis will run the risk of potential problems if you develop a fuel injector problem, head gasket problem, etc which could drastically effect the ability of the oil to continue to lubricate effectively.

Cheers,

I have had several the 6. 6, 6. 0, 7. 3 and now the 5. 9 for the first time and I have always switched to full synthetic at the first change. My milege has always been as good if not better than my friends that use the low tech approach to lubrication and sleep better knowing that my margin for errror is higher than without it, example--engine mods!

To actually answer your question, the reason people say to do this is to remove any deposits that may have been left there from the dino oil usage. Most folks that believe in this theory recommend that you cut your first interval in half when switching to synthetic - not necessarily as quickly as 1000 miles.

As for intervals, I also would not recommend going longer than 12-15k without oil analysis. You could do one analysis ($15) at 12-15k just to see how it does. That would give you a good point of reference so you know you can go longer/have to cut it shorter in the future.
