Can I just change my fluid or do I need to take it to dealer? What are they going to do besides just drain and fill for $169. 00?

I have a 48RE with 60,000 miles. It shifts fine , I just need to service it before a big trip I got coming up.

Thanks.

At that price they may be also flushing all the fluid out of the lines and converter with a machine in addition to changing the filter. . you have to ask them to be sure.

Be sure to price what it would cost you to do it - I seem to remember that all said and done it ran me around $85 for ATF, Gasket/bolt kit, Filter.

Do it yourself?

I've got the 47RE, so wanted to take extra good care of it. Got to 15k, changed the fluid and filter, went to a Magna Hytec double deep pan.

Took it in to the dealer for the 30k service. They "flushed" the fluid. Didn't drop the pan, didn't adjust the bands, didn't change the filter.

I'm a few miles away from 60k. I intend on dropping the pan and replacing the fluid and filter, checking the band adjustment. Do I need to? Probably not. But it's easy with a drain plug and the cost of fluid and filter is minimal. I don't tow and am easy on the trans. Crossing my fingers not to spend $3k on a new transmission before 100k...
