I have a 99 4x with about 115K miles. I do have an Edge Comp box on it, but I can't see how this could effect it for this problem. No other major problems regarding the engine.

Well I changed my filter with about an 1/8 of tank of fuel and now I can't get any fuel to the filter. I went and got 10 gals. of fuel because the truck is heading a little downhill and I thought maybe it just didn't have enough head pressure. I even cracked the banjo fitting on the filter case top to see if I was getting fuel. The rear fitting looked to be the supply. Nothing came out after bumping the starter about 6 - 7 times. This is after bumping a good 50 times before and after adding the fuel mentioned above. Each time I'd bump it, I'd open the brass bleeder closest to the center on the filter case top and then close it when the fuel pump stops, then repeat this after bumping the starter again and again and again... . :{ :{

I'm thinking it might be the lift pump, it's still the original one and, now that I have a problem, I recall it has been a little more troublesome to get the prime after every filter change lately. Anyway to confirm, do you think I'm on the right track?

If so, is Dodge the right place for a replacement? I'm in a pickle because I have to return to work out of state on Monday. That will be impossible, I will be late, so the fastest is the best for me right now.

Any help is appreciated. If we need to discuss particulars, leave your number or ask for mine at pm. -- email address removed --

Thanks in advance Fuelless in Mississippi... ... :D

Can you hear your lift pump run when you bump the starter? Try unplugging the electrical connection and inspect for corrosion. Clean and coat with dielectric grease. If niether works, I'm guessing your lift pump is bad... . You REALLY should install a fuel pressure gauge to monitor you lp. I have caught 2 failing pumps on my truck. Good luck, Phil

If you are hearing the lift pump run when you bump the starter, the problem is most likely the lift pump. Given you said it is the original one, improves the odds that it is the problem. The best place that I know of is to purchase the pump directly from a Cummins dealer. They will be about ah-hundred bucks cheaper than Dodge for the same part. Don't forget to get the washers for the banjo bolts, you'll need four of them.

You didn't say in your original post if you have a fuel pressure gauge. They are very useful in trouble shooting the fuel delivery system.

Good luck -Peter

If you really want to fire it up ... ... ..... I heard of people filling the canister up with fuel then trying to start it ..... This will be unfiltered diesel thats the bad part... . it may prime your VP to keep it running but then the VP will go out if the LP is bad

..... 2nd GEn + Comp + NO FP gauge = BRAVE !!!

Id punt if I was you :>

Good Luck

Worst comes to worst a little WD40 in the air intake will get her primed If its not the LP

You could try to pressurize the tank and blow fuel to the filter. Use a vacume cleaner with the hose on the blower side and seal the filler tube with rags. If you can get fuel to the injector pump it should run until you can change the lift pump. Loosen the fuel line going to the injection pump to get fuel there. Get someone to cycle the lift pump while applying pressure.

Well, it sounds like it is time to get the check book out... . I thought the lift was the problem. I don't think I'll try to presurize anything. I'm not very lucky on things along those lines. Thanks to all for the help. Now all I have to do is find the pump and parts and start wrenching. Next stop the repair manual for the procedure. I'm not sure if we have a Cummins shop near by. With my luck it will be NAPA or Dodge.

Again TDR comes through. THANKS!!

For the parts, try a truck shop or equipment shop. Lot of times they are also a source for Cummins parts & service. The Dodge repair manual makes it harder to change the lp than it really is. Forget about removing the starter, etc. Work from the top, you'll save time & effort.

Bout the same thing happened to my sons 99 last time he changed the fuel filter. Get you a new lift pump and get after it. Like others have said change it from the top no need to remove the starter.

I have bought lift pumps from both Cummins and NAPA, bout the same price, the cummins guys either had one in stock or got it for me the next morning. On my 99 I needed the pigtail too since it was the original LP with ring terminals on it. The pump I got from NAPA came with the banjo bolt washers (4 in this case) and the pigtail. I got just the bare pump from Cummins (was $30 cheaper) last time, but it came with no washers, no pigtail. It took me about an hour on my 99, just take off the fuel/water sep. then the LP is really easy to get out, I left the fuel/water sep in when I did the 01, and my knuckles paid for it...

Here is the Cummins Service locator, I have found it useful to find a Cummins center nearby. http://www.cummins.com/service_locator/index2.cfm

I heard that TDR issue 43 had instructions on changing out the lift pump, Im gona get that issue out after lunch, Im changing my lift pump today.

disable grid heater pour gas on a rag hold in front of compressor intake and the truck will crank with just the gas fumes. done it many times... be careful!!!!!

well we are just having the same problem with one of my buddies trucks. He has a 99 24 valve and we tried to change the filter on the truck today. Now we have preassure from the canister to the beginning of the injection pump but none from the injection pump to the injectors or lines. We replaced the lift pump also thinking that it could be the problem seeing as how there is 150000 miles on the truck and it was the original pump. We did this because the lift pump was not able to purge the system well enough due to a lack of preassure. Now with the new lift pump we have excelent preassure to the canister and the injection pump but none after that. Please help.
