I just changed my fuel filter at 90,536 miles I didn't drain the fuel bowl this time, but just pulled out the old filter and put the new one back in after oiling the rubber O-ring.

When I went to start the truck I bumped the starter three times before I tried to start the engine. I am not hearing the pump (which pump? lift or fuel I am not sure) that I normally hear when I do this.

The engine seems to crank at normal speed, but never fires. I usually crank for 10 - 15 seconds before I give the starter motor a rest.

I pulled out the fuel filter again to check fuel level in the bowl. It was only about 1/3 full, the same as when I pulled out the old filter.

Several weeks ago, I was stopped at a train crossing and the engine burbled for less than a second but continued to idle. This has happened twice.

As far I remember, I did not hit any wires or anything else when I changed the filter.

The engine ran fine yesterday. I probably put 100 miles on it. Temps today are in the 50's so gelling should not be an issue. Besides, I always put anit-gel in with every tank. I filled up the truck at the same station I always do about 185 miles ago.

Not that this should make any difference and because I don't want to leave out any clues, but I did change head lamps this morning.

The engine is completely stock. I don't have a fuel pressure gauge or any other way to check where the problem is.

I checked codes and have only a P 1693 - generic there is a problem - showing.

What broke? Thanks in advance for help with my dead truck!

Sounds like the dreaded lift pump. It has happened numerous times to other members. The pump is weak and when they go to prime the filter canister after doing a filter change, the pump doesn't work.

Try cleaning the connector where the wire plugs onto the lift pump. Also if you don't already have one, get a fuel pressure gauge. The gauge keeps this from being a surprise

She's a Runnin'!

lmills,

Thanks for the help. I pulled the plug off and blew it clean with compressed air that I keep around to clean my computer's innards. Even though the plug did not look dirty, it must have either been dirty or loose (even though it was a bear to pull off) because the engine started up after less than 10 seconds of cranking.

Thanks again! Look for my post elsewhere on what fuel pressure gauge to buy! Also look for another post to find out how to tell if my lift pump is dying. I am about out of warranty and don't want to have to foot the bill.

your fuel pressure gauge will tell you when the pump is dying. The pressure will start to drop too low to feed the vp44
