2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Changes to 3rd gen tow mirrors

I have been going thru the power tow mirror swap thread and it seems that the design of the 3rd gen mirrors has changed and they are no longer able swap with the 2nd gen bases. I was not able to find any details on what the problem is. Can anybody enlighten me as to exactly what the problem is? It would be great if someone was able to post some pictures that show what is different. I wold like to find a way to make this work even if it requires some machining. After the last couple of winters I am not willing to give up the heat but I really hate my slip on extensions and all the aftermarket mirrors are ugly (just my personal opinion).

If the only powered feature of the third-generation mirrors that is needed is the heated glass, it is possible to replace the non-heated second-generation glass with heated third-generation glass: http://www.burcoinc.com/

I guess I could add heat to non heated mirrors but it sure would be nice te keep the power adjust also. No answer on the changes to the new mirrors? Does anyone know why they no longer fit together?

yes, they made changes... I belive you need '05 or earlier mirrors to do the conversion

I have the towing mirrors on my 01, is sthe wiring in place to convert to the power towing mirrors from the 3rd gen trucks?

I recently broke my drivers side tow mirror and am also looking into swapping for 03-05 power/heated tow mirrors if I can find them. I've also read earlier posts, but don't know what specific changes took place in the tow mirrors after 2005. Anyone?

Same boat, I haven't seen any pics yet of the differences. Just a few comments about some 1/2" gap because of whatever was changed. Are the heads swappable instead of the entire arm?

If anyone can shed some light on the mirror changes, clearly several of us would benefit from the info.

Can anyone at least confirm whether the new heads (the assembly that rotates up/down) are interchangeable with the 2nd gen bases & arms? If we can't swap at the base connection anymore, maybe we can swap at the mirror head connection? Anyone?

I have the 2nd gen tow mirrors on and replaced them recently with new OEM ones. When I took the door panels off, I saw that the wiring for the power mirrors was indeed there. Sometime down the road I'll do the swap to 3rd Gen, but for now I'm okay, especially since I'm moving to Texas next week.
