Smoked scooter??

I have a visegrip with a bicycle chain that works great on obstinent filters. Just be careful of that alternator. I used this setup on my D-50 Turbodiesel for 11 years. Used oversized ChannelLocks and I am now back to the Bicycle-chained Visegrips.

Joe, from the explanation of your method I guess there's not as much to it as I was envisioning. Thanks for the clarification.

A long time ago I bought a filter wrench that looks kinda like a bicycle chain attached to a vise grip handle. I haven't needed to use it too often, but it will take off any filter I have run into... .

I don't need no stinkin filer wrench!!

Best tool in the shop right after duct tape is a 24 inch slip joint pliars. Wow! That mother can get almost anything off or keep it from turning. I went out and bought another one to keep in the trailer too.

I also used it to keep the fan pully from turning when getting the blasted fan hub nut loose to do the KDP. I would not be without 2 large slip joint pliars. Channel locks, IMHO, are the best but any will do. They are great oil filter wrenches but watch that pesky alternater lug. It will wake you right up if you hit it.

OIL CHANGE

I have not had any problems with the filter as long as you lube the gasket turn the filter until it is snug. The drain plug is another question. I have had to replace the drain plug due to the lip fracturing (known problem with drain plugs) To solve this problem you can purchase a flip lever plug from Geno's

I remember my first oil change. Took me over four hours to do. #@$%! Ended up driving an 18" flat blade screwdriver straight through the middle of the filter and beat the **** out of it. I was sooooo mad that I almost wanted to get rid of the truck. Luckily I haven't had that problem since.

Oil Change

I am worthless- cannot hammer a nail- my first change took 15 mins at the dealer and it was free- sometimes it pays to have no skills

LOL@Chipstien. I had the same experience - it was an all day ordeal. I was mentally beaten by that first filter. My confidence was shaken, and I had visions of a tow truck towing it to the dealer. I finally went out and bought a Vise Grip chain wrench (which was not cheap!) - which helped a lot. But in the end, it was using a screwdriver as a chisel along the top of the filter that finally broke it loose. Oh yeah, and it wasn't over when it did break loose. I still had to beat on it with the screwdriver and work it around quite a bit before I could use my bare hand on it. #@$%!

No more problems since I'm the one who installs them now. :)
