Ive got a heavy oil leak on the front of the engine. I think its the front crank seal. I ordered one from Cummins but I didnt get the one with the sleeve.

1. Is the Front Crankseal with sleeve the same size seal as the one without sleeve? Can I order the sleeve seperate?

2. How can you tell If you need to put in the sleeve?Ive got 70000 miles on my engine.

3. Is it better to take off the raditior to get access to the seal?

4. Ive read that its important to line up the cover. Im not clear on that.

5. Are there any special tools needed?Pilot tool? Gear puller?

6. Whats the time frame to do the job?

7. Is there any thing that I should be looking for, unusual wear etc?

Thank for taking the time to help

Mike

Mike;

For all your questions, you can get answers in the 12 valve FAQ on the dowel pin replacement at the top of the 12 valve forum. Not to alarm you but your truck is vulnerable to loose the dowel pin. Hopefully yours is still in tact. With 70K there should not be a grove worn in the crank yet, so no sleave should be needed. The Cummins kit should have repair procedure with it. Depending how quick you are with tools the job normally take 2-4 hrs of time. Clean up is most time consumed. The seal is a b--ch, but once started goes ok. When installing the cover and Seal MUST BE INSTALLED DRY, CRANK NEEDEDS TO BE SUPER CLEAN AND DRY no lube, or oil present for a proper seal. This is a teflon seal and no lube is to be used.

2-if there is a grove.

3-no

4-I made some guide pins- out of longer bolts. 4 of these help

5-no- no gear pullers

6-see above

7- check bolts holding the gear case, to the block. 18# lbs torque dowel pin see if you have the new case, it will have retaining lip on the pin. If not push the pin back in, ping it with a punch and Tab it. If you have questions on this do a search on the subject. Read the FAQ's refereed to above. No special tools required, just patients.

Hope this has helped. You can do it!!

I got my sleeve/seal kit from Cummins,I don't know the part # . It comes with new seal , a sleeve ,and plastic guide. I don't think 2001 had problems with the kdp. Are you sure its not the gear cover it self? I did a injector pump install and afterwards the cover was leaking bad, that's when I did the crank seal. Could also be vacuum pump/ps pump seal?
