Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Changing Fuel Filter in 2001

I recently read in a TDR about issues where folks did not properly change their fuel filter and the problems it caused later. All I've been doing is pulling out the old and dropping in the new. What is the correct procedure and is there more to this than just what I've done? Do I need to drain the fuel and if so, why? What is the correct procedure? So far I've not had any problems and it always starts easy after changing the filter.

The way I do it is to drain off what fuel I can, into a glass jar. I see if there are contaminants or water. If none, then it is saved. I then take out the old filter and use clean rags to completely clean the inside of the filter compartment out. I put the new filter in, pour the reserved fuel from the jar. I put the top back on, and bump the engine a few times, to cycle the fuel pump, and fill the remaining space in the fuel filter housing. Then I try to start it. Sometimes it sputters for a few seconds, but usually it does just fine.

It takes all of 5 minutes at the max.

What you just described is what my STEALER has been doing when I had them change the filter. I now do it myself. I do drain fuel from the filter once a month just to make sure no water is building up and I figure it would pull out any dirt. I'm sure you would be fine doing it just like you have been. If you haven't noticed were a pretty anal group here when it comes to maintance
