We're in the process of changing out a 99 motor with an 02 HO motor. We have the complete 02 motor plus PCM and wiring harnesses. Does anybody have any helpfull hints or know conflicts with doing this change out. The reason for the change out is the 99 has a cracked 53 block. Dodge & Cummins were no help. They would gladly do it for $7k. :( Can we use the 99 PCM and throtle body with the 02 pump and ECM? That way cruise and all gauges should still work.

Thanks for all input.

I don't know for sure, but I think you'll be fine. You might have to have your ecm reflashed in order to make it work with the auto transmission pcm, but I would think that would be the biggest problem.

Please let us know what you find, obviously none of us know what's going on.

Matt

On Edit: I guess you didn't say it was an auto transmission truck, I'm just making up my own stories as I go :D

I'm quite sure that one of the engines will have both a crank position sensor and a cam position sensor and the other will only have one of the two sensors, cam sensor only on the '02 maybe? I dont remember for sure :(

Oops, sorry, I missread your post, I thought you were going to try the '99 ECM on the '02 engine, position sensors wont be a problem with matching '02 ECM

I would love to hear how this works out. I'm in the same boat, I heard that you can not use the 99 transmission if it is an automatic because of the ECM and PCM  . I dont know how much difference there is through the years.

Well the 02 motor was dropped in lastnight. It started and seemed to rev fine. The motor had the 02 ECM on it, but the PCM was still from the 99. All gauges seemed to work, but the check engine light was on. We tried to scan for codes, but the scanner couldn't talk to this set up. The guys at PDR said that we would need to change out the 99 PCM to the 02 PCM which we have. We'll do that today and see what happens. Right now it looks like all will work fine. Should know more by tonight. PDR also said that we would probably need to change the CTM "Central Timer Module" That is on the way from the 02 truck. Just to recap, this is a 99 4x4 truck with 5 spd that is getting a motor from a 02 HO 2x4 6 spd. We are putting the ECM, PCM, and CTM from the 02 truck into the 99 truck. Truck runs with 02 ECM and 99 PCM, but check engine light is on. Probably because there's not crank sensor. Will post more later.

Motor in and truck is running

OK, We a 02 motor into a 99 truck. Just for everyones info. , the truck ran with the 02 ECM and 99 PCM, but the check engine light was on and the scanner couldn't talk to the ECM. We swapped the 99 PCM with the 02 PCM and the check engine light went away. ABS light is now on, but we haven't changed to the 02 CTM. After the install we found out that the 02 pump was bad so we put the 99 pump onto the what used to be 02 HO motor. Truck runs fine, but has less power since we haven't swapped the HO injectors out with the ETC injectors from the 99. All gauges are working, haven't tested the CC yet. So to recap, you can put an 02 motor in a 99 truck if you have the 02 ECM, PCM, and CTM. You can put an ETC pump on an HO motor, will loose HP due to smaller injectors.

IF anybody knows and can tell me, are the differences between the ETC & ETH injector pumps mechanically only? It would seem that is the case since we are not getting any codes. If there are other differences I'd like to know. I assume that the higher line pressure is mechanical only and the electronics handles the timing, which is the same for either pump. I don't know, but the truck is running now and that is good. :)

All of this because of the #53 block. That motor had 190k and was running great, you just had to uses a trasfer pump and 55gal barrel of water in the bed to keep water in the motor. It was leaking really bad at the end.

I forgot,

Thanks to PDR, ADT, and Marco for talking with me one time or another through this process. These are some great guys.

Thanks to all,

JON

You might also think about a reflash for your ecm. I have been told that running the HO programming with a std output injector pump will acually cause you to loose power due to shorter duration of injection pulse. Check with PIERs to be sure but if I remember right that was what they told me.
