I pull a 5th wheel with a stock 97' with a 3. 50 rear axle and am thinking about having it swapped out for a 3. 70 or a 4. 10 to increase pulling ability especially on hills, etc. Would I really notice much increase going to 3. 7? What would it cost in most areas to have it done. I am concerned about going to a 4. 10 due to higher rpms at normal cruising speeds, lower gas mileage etc.

You would be better off just increasing the power. Add a cam plate and injectors. Then you can get good milage and have power to pull.

I think the 4:10 is your only option--it was the only one availabe 2 years ago--you'll need to change the carrier also and don't forget the front end if it's a 4x4----chris

I'd vote for a plate and a governor spring kit. You'd be able to tow a freight train with your 3. 54s ;)

Probably cost less, and won't hurt your mileage (except when you stand on it a lot)

I bought my father a 97/2500 with Auto and 4:10s. I then installed 265/75/16 tires and it is the sweetest combination. I also installed a set of 215 injectors and 4"exhaust.

Before you go BOMBING the sox off your engine... ..... spec. the truck right. Then it will amaze you what a few enhancements will do.

The differance in mileage between the 3:50s and the 4:10s in very, very little. Whatever you would loose in fuel mileage will be more than offset by increased trannie life.
