Is the problem he is trying to fix poor overall braking? The rears do VERY little stopping. I tow lots with mine, high speed and estimate about 250K miles before rears need replacing. The problem on pre 2000, I believe, is that they use tiny little brake pads up front with only (is it one or two pistons) and 2000 up made a major improvement to the size of the pads (total surface area) and doubled the piston count in the calipers. There is a company that makes a fantastic upgrade kit for the front, new calipers, pads and cross drilled rotors, etc. Can't remember the name. . Pricy but I heavily considered it on my '98, then I bought a 2000!
