2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Changing Rear Speakers in a 1998

I'm looking into possibilities of changing out the factory speakers w/o infinity system in my truck. The front speakers I have been able to see that they are easily replaceable but quickly analyzing the rear back panel speakers, I do not see specifically how to change out these speakers myself. Since I would be purchasing speakers, even if I bought from a local place I would have to pay installation fee so I figured if I could figure it out I would do it myself. This is a future plan of changing these speakers and would like to know how to do it considering I noticed one of them in the back are busted. All of them are still factory speakers and my new sony head unit can over power them. Any suggestions would be beneficial.

To change the speakers (by the shop manual) you have to:

1. remove rear seat

2. remove the quarter trim panel. Do this by removing the door sill cover as necessary to clear quarter trim.

3. remove the cup holder with a trim stick or thin screw driver

4. remove the lower seat belt anchor bolts

5. remove the quarter trim panel screws

6. separate the quarter trim panel from quarter panel

7. pull the seat belt webbing through the opening in the quarter trim panel and remove the panel from the vehicle.

(most likely to access the speaker it wouldn't have to be totally disassembled)

to remove the speaker:

1. remove the screws that secure the speaker to the vehicle

2. pull the speaker from it's enclosure and disconnect the speaker wires.

TA DA!

The rear speakers are easy to change once you get the door panel off. I put 6. 5" polk momo component (mid range, tweeter and passive crossovers) speakers in all four doors. I power them with a four channel Rockford amp running off of a Pioneer HU. I ran new larger wire for everything. There are a few pictures of this in my readers rigs. Sorry I don't have a picture of the rear door.

I did the same as above, cept I didnt unbolt the seat belt. The trim panel will move forward away from where it sits, and allow access to the speaker area. Like CumminsPower98, I highly recommend rewiring ALL speakers, the factory 20-some gauge wire is not sufficient. 18ga lamp wire works pretty good here, and is cheap. Stranded is better. Just watch for sharp corners that could cut into the wire, and pinch points.



Though this is a 98, you didnt mention replacing the speakers in the 'door'. Do you have a rare 98 that doesnt have the extra 2 doors? If so, that disassembly method WDaniels laid out will work, but I dunno about removing the panels from the doors. Shouldnt be too different than the front doors tho I bet.



Ohya, dont go cheap on the speakers. Do it once, do it right.

I have a 98 crew cab, I only have 2 doors, unfortunately i didn't find luck in getting the extended cab like i had hoped but i did get a 24valve which is by far more important to me at the time and well lower mileage on this one. The front speakers in teh door are easy to get to by just taking the door panel off, ive already done this to check to make sure they were 6x9's =) I suppose the back speakers are also 6x9's???

The rears on mine were round and I think 6", I didn't measure them. My first post was assuming you had the doors back there since it's a '98. I have not had the covers off of a club cab.

Go custom like i did dont forget to put a set of 10" sub in while your in there. you won't even have to mess with door latch linkages like i did.

funny thing is i had pictures of your truck saved on my computer already, just never noticed the speaker system hehe, which wheels do you have? I was kinda just thinking about the mtx custom box to go under the seat with 2 10's. whats your opinion on that box?

I have that box in my wifes truck (02 dakota) it sounds great. the problem i had was where do you put the amps. With the kenwood 717 dvd monitor i have in the dash you get a remote "brains" box that i mount under the drivers seat and under the passengers seat i have a 10 disc changer. That doesn't leave many spots to put your amps other than the head liner. But the mtx boxes do sound good and i think you can get them with a amp build in.
