Changing rearend differential

I will be changing the rear end differential tomorrow. I am going to amsoil. I would certainly appreciate any tips on doing the job.

Anything that will make it easier or better. I know there have been many threads on this and I looked back about twenty days to find some but to no avail. I am not going to use the friction modifier at first. I remeber reading that it is a good idea to try it first then put some in if needed.

Take your time!

Wash the outside and let it dry good before you start (if it's really dirty), this will help keep little dust and sand particles out. Make sure you don't get any gunk inside while scraping off the cover sealer.



Use an old baster or sone sort of suction device to suck the remaining oil out of the bottom of the case (there are a few ounces in there).



Don't touch the inside of the case with any rags or paper towls. The lint sticks to the cast iron too good.



Let the sealer set up for an hour or 2 (more is better) before you refill the case.



I added a Mag Hytech because I HATE scraping the sealer off. That is the most time consuming part of the whole job.

I've done this twice, the last time when I installed a Mag-Hytec. I agree with Extreme1- I hate scraping the sealer. I cover the gears to prevent any sealer from getting in there. When I've done it, I've used what my father-in-law calls a "cookie". I don't know the proper name, but it's an air operated tool that is a hard rubber brush and makes removing the sealer very easy, and prevents scratching the metal.

Don't forget to get some good steel wool or one of those green scrub pads to help with the silicon removal. I use brake cleaner to clean the surfaces after everything is off so I get good adhesion and seal.
