I have heard that the shift point on my 98 1/2 auto. can be changed by adjusting the cable going from the trottle plate to the transmission. Can someone tell me how to do that and how much will it change the shift point?

 but :)

The setting of the kick-down cable determines the full throttle shift points and passing gear. Light throttle shift points are controlled by the throttle valve stop on the valve body.

On a 12 valve full throttle shift should occur between 2400-2500 rpm and a 24 valve between 2800- 3100 rpm's at operating temps.

Remove black plastic cover.

Disconnect the kick down cable from ball by pulling the cable forward, then towards valve cover.

Release the plastic cable anchor by squeezing the lock tabs. press on one tab down with a screwdriver, then squeeze the other while pushing the housing and twisting gently.

Before proceeding further, establish a reference by noting how far the tapered plastic "bullet" sticks out of the cable stop. Any adjustments you make can be referenced to the original setting.

Adjusting the cable forward (towards the radiator), where the bullit sticks further out will make the trans. shift sooner.

Adjusting the cable backwards (towards the firewall) will make it shift later.

In this position, the bullet doesn't protrude from the cable housing.

To adjust the cable, carefully remove the white positioning clip.

Be carefull it's fragile.

Pry gently with your finger only.

release one side, then other, and slowly pull clip off.

Slide cable in or out (what you are desiring for shift points) and replace the white clip.

Hey TurboDiezel, Thanks for the input, I thought all 98 1/2's were 24 so I'm still learning.

Pinion Twister, Thanks for the details. I think mine is shifting a tad low so I'll fiddle with it and see what happens. Thanks again.

you're right, the 98. 5s are 24v. He probaly skimmed over the post and just seen the 98 part and missed the 1/2.
