I have around 51,000 miles on my truck now and I think it is time to change the fluid in the transmission. I want to go with Royal Purple this time around over the stock fluid. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the process they went through on changing the fluid, tools needed, how much fluid I need to buy, and any other supplies I will need. Do I need to drain from the driver or passenger side PTO cover? Thanks.

Check the archives for the past week. The topic is covered in some detail by myself and others. You can remove the pto cover or just the botom bolt to drain the lube. The fill plug takes a 17 mm hex wrench.

Be advised that the filling can be awkward with certain bottle designs, especially on a 4x4 since the T-case wants to interfere. I spent about $8 on a quart of Redline that ended up polishing the floor.

I wouldn't advise using anything other than the OEM fluid in the 6 speed. It is specialy formulated oil!

Gotta agree with Cliffman. There's a sticker on the cover of my transmission stating oil that doesn't meet Mopar specs for this application will void the warranty. With 51,000 miles on your truck there should be another 24,000 miles left on the warranty, I think .

i used the RP synchromax on mine, works great. I have about 20k on the transmission with it now. It was 3* the other day and it shifted just fine, especially into third where i used to have that grind. I used a long tube with an adapter to screw onto the top of the lube bottle. Autozone carrys them, they say their for axles but work well in this scenario. The RP bottle is kind of long and funky shaped, like a typical gear lube. The position for me wasn't very comfortable but I got it done.

You need a 17mm hex, that is the only oddball tool. I think the drain plug on the T-case is 10mm though. I did my T-case and transmission with RP synchromax.

I thought that the warranty on transmission was out at 36K

Filling made easier...

After installing my FAST Coolers, I filled the transmission using a drill operated pump ($10) using top fill of Fast Cooler. No spills no mess.

I used "The Right Stuff" gasket maker - it ain't cheap but it sets up in ~15 minutes instead of several hours.

I've filled enough trannies from the fill plug to know I'd rather pull the shifter... ... ...

My truck came with a 7 year/70,000 mile powertrain warranty, I'm assuming that would include the transmission???

My math was off a bit, 70,000 minus 51,000 would leave 19,000 miles remaining on the warranty. Sorry about that!

i pulled the shifter also, way easy,,,, dont even think about doing it anyother way!!! Does anyone know about people adding over the recommended amount via the shifter hole to their manual transmission? I didn't do this, but have heard some talk recently about it.

If you add more than the recommended amount of fluid through the shifter hole, then it makes a mess. I have done it twice now. The transmission will blow oil out all over the underside of the truck through the breather tube on the top of the transmission.

If you put in 5 quarts, then it stops blowing in a day or so. If you put in more than 5 quarts (like six or seven) then it blows oil for weeks and you start to wonder if it will ever stop. Been there, done that.
