Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Charging System Cycling In and Out

Since my truck was new, during cold weather the charging system seems to cycle in and out. The voltmeter jumps up and down about every five seconds. As soon as I take off and get to a higher RPM, it either stops or I just can't tell at this point. If I leave the truck idling, it does it until it warms up it seems. Does it w/Torque Dog on or off. Any ideas?

i think you are seeing the grid heaters cycling ... . it will do that to the Volt meter

Every thing sounds normal to me. Oo.

took mine to a dealer. They diagnosed it as a bad alternator and ordered a new one for it. The new alternator made no difference. Then I checked TDR... Someone said it will do this 10 - 15 min and quit after 18 miles/hour and it did. Not really a problem but should be written in the owners manual or stuck to the sunvisor or maybe tell the dealer at least.

My 98. 5 has done it since new now has 440,000kms. Its normal grid heaters cycling in colder weather. Turrns off t about 20 mph.

My truck does it too... sounds weird, but it is normal.
