I need some help on the charging system, my alternator checks out good. But it is not charging the batteries. I have heard that it could be the engine speed sensor. Does anyone have any input on this? I am also getting the in/out of overdrive. I ahve heard that this may be the tps. Any help will be greatly appericated.

Thanks,

Dunno why the speed sensor or TPS would affect charging the battery. The PCM controls charging by reading the battery temperature from a sensor under the driver's side battery. Could that be the sensor you are referring to?

The engine speed sensor affects several things including the charging system and transmission shifting. Make sure the connector is secure and it has a good ground connection.

You will find the sensor at the front of the engine right above the vibration damper and the connector is at the top of the engine.

It's ground wire is tied to a common ground at the top of the block on the driver's side next to #1 cylinder valve cover.

If it does have a problem, you should also see erratic operation of the tachometer.

As Bill mentioned, check the battery temperature sensor too.

I see you are driving a 96. Have you ever changed the batteries?Perhaps your charging system is ok but the batteries are not "taking a charge".

If you do not have a good digital voltmeter to verify that your charging system is putting out nearly 14. 8VDC (engine at 1000RPM, headlights on) you can get a rough idea of charge voltage by watching the headlights for an intensity change between enging off, vs operatiion at about 1000 RPM. If they are dull, engine off, and bright engine on, the charging system is probably ok, but batteries bad.

MINE DID THE SAME THING ABOUT A YEAR AGO. IT WOULD JUMP OUT OF OVER DRIVE AND THE AMP METER WOULD SHOW THAT IT WAS NOT CHARGING. I TOOK IT TO DODGE AND THE PUT A CRANK SENDING UNIT IN AT THAT FIXED IT. GOOD LUCK
