Charlie Daniels Angers Arab Community

Associated Press/AP Online

DEARBORN, Mich. - Charlie Daniels, the man who wrote and sang "This Ain't No Rag, It's a Flag," is drawing heat from Arab-Americans who say it refers to a derogatory term used against them.

Daniels, 67, is scheduled to perform Saturday in Dearborn, the center of southeastern Michigan's 300,000-member Arab-American community.

After the Sept. 11 terror attacks, Daniels wrote and recorded the song, which became a country hit.

It begins:

"This ain't no rag, it's a flag and we don't wear it on our heads. It's a symbol of the land where the good guys live. Are you listening to what I said?"

On Saturday, the Charlie Daniels Band will perform at the city-sponsored Homecoming Festival.

"Someone who is trying to get popular through bigotry, bias and hatred should not be welcome, especially in a city like Dearborn with its rich diversity," Imad Hamad, regional director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, told the Detroit Free Press.

City spokeswoman Mary Laundroche said no formal complaints have been received about the performance and the show will go on.

"Ragheads" is a slur used against Arabs, Muslims and others who wear turbans or cover their heads.

Daniels says the song is not directed at Arabs and Muslims in general, just at turbaned terrorists like Osama bin Laden.

"It's not anti-Arab or anti-anything," he said Wednesday by phone from Tennessee, where he lives. "The only thing it's `anti' is the people who bombed us on 9/11. I have people who say you're putting down people who wear turbans. I'm not. "

"There are good Arabs and bad Arabs, good Greeks and bad Greeks, good people and bad people in any race," Daniels said. "I'm not a racist person. I came up during the old Jim Crow days. I know what racism is. "

Ain't it GREAT the way the Barbra Streisands, Alec Baldwins and various other self-proclaimed "spokesmen for America" can stand up in a place where they are only paid to PERFORM - and then attempt to lecture those who paid for the performance THEN are exposed to hate filled diatribes against our Presidents and other leaders of our country - indeed, our country itself, if it suits their agenda. But NO one had better dare SUPPORT the President, our country or those who stand up in support of what our country stands for or will fight against...

And THEY consider the rest of us the enemy - and THEMSELVES the true "patriots"...

It figures

Sort of reminds you of Linda Ronstadt. She was putting down most of her audience in Vegas recently,& was escorted out of the casino showroom for her troubles. Management refunded ticket prices & assured the crowd she would never perform there again. Seems like the only thing she hasn`t put down lately is a fork. DK :-laf

Dearborn, MI eh? Dearborn is the largest Arab community outside of the middle east. I haven't heard anything on the local news about this, but if anything goes down tonight, over this, I'll be telling you about it.

I'd half figure that Charlie was invited to do a gig there, by the community leaders, so they can boycot him on their own turf. I doubt it will be a sellout crowd unless they want in to boo him.

That one was pretty funny - as I heard it, they didn't even let her go back to her room, simply escorted her straight out the door...

Too many political "entertainers" using their stage as a pulpit to lecture their congregation...

"Shut the hell up on the politics, and SING like we paid ya for!"

I'm not interested in their religion, sexual orientation or habits - whyinhell would I be interested in hearing about their political opinions?

I couldn't agree more.

I'm with Charlie on this one too. If they don't like it, they can just LEAVE and don't come back.

I read somewhere that Charlie wouldnt sing his song. I am disappointed in him for this, he is supposed to stand up for what he believes, not cave into a bunch of arabs. Goes to show its all in the money.

I enjoy that tune! That's what freedom of speach is all about. Don't like it, leave. You aren't forced to go to his concert. I'm sick of all the whining about the racism towards the arabs. Sure there is some going on, but it's like any other type of racism. Ask for trouble, your going to get it. I think by whining about this concert or any other, you are drawing more attention to yourself. That makes me more ****** off about what happened. Be seen but not herd.

Poor old Charlie sure has caught a lot of flack over that song. Maybe he ought to substitute something that people found less offensive, like:

*****

Let me tell you 'bout Ahab The Arab

The Sheik of the burning sand

He had emeralds and rubies just dripping off 'a him

And a ring on every finger of his hands

He wore a big ol' turban wrapped around his head

And a scimitar by his side

And every evening about midnight

He'd jump on his camel named Clyde... and ride

*****

Before the virtuous forces of political correctness cry out for my blood for posting the above, note that they are lyrics to a real song, namely "Ahab the Arab" which was a Top 10 hit for Ray Stevens back in 1962... .
