I might have missed it but has anyone tried to have the min cruise speed on turned down to 0. I have done this on big trucks, Maybe it wont let you. This would let the cruise do it, It would be like the pto feature.

OFF TRACK A BIT , do I need this?

Now that I finally have my OEM (Cummins/Dodge) high idle working automaticially, why would I want to make my own box?

(Not being difficult but rather I have two add on high idle boxes. I am about to remove them unless someone has a good reason to keep an addon high idle on the truck that can now high idle on it's own)

your truck will only high idle if some cold weather criteria are met. Others in this forum are wanting to keep the idle up other than just when cold.

Finally High Idle

Was snowmobiling in Cle Elum this week end, Saturday morning high idle finally worked. This morning 3 Cylinder idle kicked in also. Guess the last trip to dealer last spring got it enable. I was one of the early people to get the reflash a couple years ago. Glad I knew what to expect with the 3 cylinder mode!!!! SNOKING

Figuring out what makes the high/3cyl idle work is challenging.

Most times if cold enough the high idle works after a minute or so. Sometimes nothing... . Once time I shut it down and restarted and then it worked?

If 'seemed' like the 4wd being in 4wd kept if from working but i"ve not had a chance to check that again.

I guess I will leave the simpler of the two high idle gadgets I've installed on the truck as a backup. I still remember last winter idling (to operate strobes and rotators) at an accident scene for 4 hours a -30F. When I realized that the truck cab was not generating enough heat for me to warm up and the thermometer was hanging at the bottom left, I ended up using the ice scraper against the seat as a high idle device.

Cheap Idle Adjustment

PS Diesel Products has an inexpensive and very neat idle adjustment gadget that gives you a "volume control" knob in the cab. You can turn it OFF or adjust the idle continuously from factory original to fairly high (probably up to the top of the governor).

They probably have a web site.

Happy idling,

Ok, enough suspense. 12 volts IS THE TRICK :D! It works! YOu'll have to get the PTO speed setting increased at the stealership. Mine only ramped up to 950 RPMS when I applied 12 volts. I had it reset today at the dealership to 1250 RPMs. WooHoo, now we have something!

What I want to know is why did Kris get this to work way back then. And why was he able to get it reset to 1250 at the dealership. Did this dealership know something that no one else does. Why would it stop working? It seems that everyone has given up on this ... ... . why?

cylindr wash can happen at any RPM. the cylinder temps are what prevents it low temps = wash down. place aload on the engine(exhaust brake)or put it in gear and youll have plenty of temps at idle speed.

I've noticed on mine 1000rpms will barley keep it in the comfort zone, 1200 and it'll be nice and toasty warm. So depending on the weather and how hard it has to work to keep itself warm, I vary the no load idle speed. I have no need for an exhaust brake and if I understood snowman right would never put it in gear with the brake on and walk away to keep a load on the motor.

Does anyone have any insight as to whether or not this will work on a 2003? My FSM says it is different pins. I have no idea how to figure out what wire or where this is. I know this is the 2nd gen Forum but this is the biggest thread that came up about it...

Found and hooked up PTO wire the 12v source and got nothing on my 02. The wire only showed 9mV not 5v without the switch on. Going to start calling dealers Monday to see if I can find one that knows anything.

I have a 2001 Diesel Powertrain Diagnostic Procedures manual and on page 269 it shows a schematic diagram for the 2000 Dodge BR/BE 5. 9L Cummins Diesel. On the diagram coming out of the ECM is PTO 26 (pin number?) The PTO is in dashed lines going to a on/off switch (normally open). From there the dashed line connects to the Idle Validation Switches Box. From there a solid line goes to the sensor ground for the following sensors: Manifold Pressure (pin 8), Oil Pressure (pin 10), pin 10 goes to both Manifold Pressure and Oil Pressure labeled 5 VDC, Air Temp sensor IAT (pin7), WIF sensor (pin 21), Coolant temp sensor ECT (pin14), and sensor ground (pin 11). In the Idle Validation Box there is a APPS Box.

Mean anything? I need high idle.

Anyone every try holding the idle up to 1200 then appling the 12V to the PTO wire, and then let up on the throttle and see if it holds the RPMs??????? Just a thought! SNOKING

The pto wire is for use with an aftermarket pto device. You jumper from your aftermarket high idler to this wire. It keeps the ecm from setting fault codes due to high idling. There is no way to make the engine to high idle using this wire only. Those who claimed to have this result on page three of this thread are FOS. (Giz007)

Does the application of the PS high idle kit cause codes to be set in the ecm? I had read some discussion about codes being set after someone had added the practical solutions high idle kit. I would consider buying it, if it was not going to set codes. THanks

The PS high idler will set codes, but nothing serious and you don't get a check engine light. If I remember correctly it sets a Vech Speed sensor code because the ECM sees RPM and no vechicle speed. It has no effect on the truck and I clear the code each spring.

There may be a way around this, like using the PTO wire to tell the ecm you using the PTO, but I have not worried about it. Its just a code afterall.

My high idler from DSG has never set codes that i'm aware of (no check engine lights) in the 1 year/ 25k that i've owned it. Very happy with it once I got over the initial cost shock. :--)
