I am about to renew my trucks tags next week and would like to know from you guys in Denver (Jeffco) and in the Springs (El Paso County) which is cheaper? I was registered at mom and dad's in Conifer which is Jefferson County and now living most the time in El Paso County with my girlfriend in Colorado Springs.

Emissions are required in both counties so I need to do that but is there much difference in actual price? I think Jeffco was going to be $200 for my 99. This is the first time I have to renew tags since I bought it in November '02 (Started plates and tags Jan '03).

THANKS!

Nploysa,

Fortunately I was able to register my truck in Colorado before I retired from the USAF. Because I wasn't a Colorado resident, I got the military exemption and paid $134.

The lady at DMV stated if I had to pay full price it would have cost me $404. The high fee, in her explanation, was due to the weight of my vehicle... weighs more than 6,500 lbs. They actually made me bring a weight ticket from a certified scale in order to register my truck.

Not looking forward to registration fees this year. Not sure how others are dodging (no pun intended) the 6,500 lb thing. By the way, I'm in El Paso county.

In Colorado, the fees vary by county. It depends on how much they charge you for ownership tax. My gut feel is that EL Paso will be cheaper, though I do not know that for sure. I am currently in Jefferson, but have lived in Park (Guffey) and Las Animas (Trinidad) in the last few years. Something else to consider:

There used to be three classes of light truck plates in Colorado;

1. The standard "Truck" or "TRK" plate. This plate assumed you were using the truck for commercial purposes, and as such applied a higher road usage tax. This is the most expensive.

2. The "Rec Truck" or "RTK" plate. I think you were required to sign an affidavit that stated the truck was going to be used only for pleasure and personal usage; or something similar. This is less.

3. The "Farm" or "FTK" plate. This plate requires you to sign an affidavit stating that the truck is going to be used specifically in agriculture. I think you also have to be on file with the Dept of Ag. These are the cheapest truck plates.

I thought I read that they were doing away with the designation on the side of the plates, and maybe the different classes too. So, some of this information may no longer be valid. Remember, too, that if you choose a non standard plate, such as "Fire Fighter", "10th Mountain Division" or other plate, there is an additional charge, sometimes yearly. Double check when you are at the county clerk in case I made a mistake. Hope this helps.

WOW!!! I can't believe that tags for a truck are that high, I know i have seen you guys talk about it before but i thought maybe it was personal property tax you were paying on the truck.

Here in Va. I farm and run farm tags the cost, $19. 95 yep less than 20 bucks.

And Inspection $15. 00

I can't wait till my tags are only $200.

First year was over $600, and then again last summer it was just under $600. I think I have done my part to pay for all the congested roads.

Wyatt, when you buy the truck you have to pay the tax at the same time out here. These numbers are strictly for the little sticker on your plate, no sales or property tax at all.
